Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are a breed of dog that are part of the sporting group of dogs. This group encompasses other breeds like golden retrievers, Vizslas, and Irish Setters that are all known for their grace, intelligence, and attractiveness. Labrador Retrievers are a popular breed among many dog-lovers, due to their gentle, caring, and loyal nature. They make great companions and are adept in many activities, such as tracking, hunting, and retrieving. Labradors are also exceptionally eager to please their owners.
Labrador Retrievers are not considered to be non-shedding dogs, as they have a double-coat which does require regular grooming to keep their fur from matting and to prevent tangles. This double coat also means that Labradors will naturally shed in a variety of environments, with more frequent shedding in warmer months when their coat is denser. To reduce shedding, regular brushing should be a part of any Labrador Retriever's grooming routine. This helps remove loose hair and dirt from the fur before it lands on furniture or carpet.
Expert opinion is that Labradors may benefit from a diet specifically crafted for working dogs, such as an allowance of premium-grade protein, carbohydrates for energy, and even a small amount of fat for energy and healthy skin and coat condition. High-quality kibble, such as those containing whole-meat ingredients and ample fruits and vegetables, is recommended. Additionally, a moderately rich diet of quality wet foods may also be beneficial for Labradors. As with any dietary change, dogs should be transitioned gradually and monitored for any adverse effects.
Before bringing home a new Labrador Retriever, it's important to be prepared and set yourself and your new family member up for success. Some smaller variations can be as small as 40lbs, while some of the larger variations can weigh as much as 140lbs. The breed also comes in two distinction body types: Field-bred and Show-bred. Field-bred Labs usually come in a smaller size than Show-bred Labs. However, trainability, temperament, and personality are not dependent on size and both variations make exceptional house pets.
It is recommended to walk your Labrador Retriever for 30-60 minutes every day. The amount of time you should be walking depends on the age, energy level, and breed of your Labrador Retriever.
