Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are classified as a sporting group breed of dog. They are a friendly, intelligent, and loyal breed that was actually developed in the early 1800s in Newfoundland, Canada for hunting and retrieving. They have since been used as working dogs as well as for companionship due to their adoring personalities. They are great with children, due to their kindhearted and loving nature, but they do require regular exercise in order to stay active and healthy.
Labrador Retrievers are not hypoallergenic dogs, meaning they may trigger allergies for those who are allergic to dogs. However, they are widely considered to be amongst the least likely breeds to trigger an allergic reaction. This is because of their short, water-resistant coats which are easy to brush and lack an undercoat. This makes it harder for allergens like pollen, dust, or dander to cling to the coat of a Labrador Retriever. Additionally, Labradors have less dander than other breeds, making them a great dog for those who have allergies.
Labrador Retrievers should not be given items that are high in fat or sugar, as this can cause weight gain and other digestive issues. Additionally, human food should generally be avoided, especially bones, chips, and chocolate. Keep in mind that food items that are meant for humans can contain things like preservatives and spices that can be dangerous to your pup. Additionally, DO NOT give your lab food meant for other animals, such as cat food, as it has a completely different nutrient makeup that could be detrimental to your pup's health.
It's important to be well-prepared before bringing home a new Labrador Retriever. There are definitely a few essentials to consider before the big pup arrives. First off, a high-quality food that's nutritionally balanced is important; large breed-specific food should be given as puppies, while adult formula should be introduced as they mature. Secondly, it's important to provide a comfortable space for them to sleep in, preferably with a soft and supportive bed or crate.
