Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers belong to the sporting class of dogs. This class is typically made up of larger, strong, and intelligent dogs, and the Labrador Retriever is one of the breed standards. The sporting class of dogs was originally bred for hunting and retrieving, and Labrador Retrievers certainly have the ability to do all of these things. The Labradors of today, however, are more likely to be found playing fetch in the backyard or snuggling up on the couch with their humans.
The Labrador Retriever's coat has a short, straight, and dense, built weatherproof coat. It consists of a soft, thick undercoat covered by a layer of coarse, longer guard hairs. Depending on the specific coloring, Labradors come in three colors; black, yellow and chocolate. The coat is water-resistant and also protects them from the cold. The Labrador Retriever has an otter-like tail that is thick at the base and tapered at the tip.
Labrador Retrievers are lovable and loyal, but they have big appetites and need a wide variety of food to stay healthy. A diet formulated specifically for the breed is usually the best option for their dietary needs, as it should include proper amounts of protein, carbohydrates, and fat with adequate vitamins and minerals. However, Labradors enjoy devouring a selection of whole grains, lean proteins, high-quality meats, and fresh fruits and vegetables.
To properly prepare your home for a new Labrador Retriever, begin with puppy-proofing the space. Make sure all hazardous items like loose items, small objects that can be swallowed, medications, and cleaning products are secured or stored out of reach. Be sure to provide your new pup with plenty of chew toys, as Labs love to chew and often find themselves in trouble if they don't have an appropriate outlet. Create a safe, comfortable area for potty training.
Labrador Retrievers come in three standard sizes small, medium and large. However, their exact size can vary depending on breed lines and individual differences. Generally, small Labs weigh between 20 and 40 lbs and are taller than 16 inches. Medium Labs weigh between 40 and 60 lbs and stand up to 21 inches tall, while large Labs typically weigh more than 60 lbs and can exceed 24 inches in height. Although these are the most common sizes found, some Labradors may vary from these measurements.
Labrador Retrievers are famously known for having high energy levels and a strong desire for physical activity. Highly intelligent and eager to learn, they require exercise and playtime daily in order to be healthy and content. This breed enjoys physical activity such as going on walks, running, agility sports, and swimming. These activities can be beneficial for both maintaining a Lab's physical health and mental wellbeing. Labs are also known for their enthusiasm and love of people, making them enjoyable companions for outdoor activities.
Labrador Retrievers are particularly known for being friendly and outgoing, which makes them an incredibly popular pet and an ideal companion for a child. Despite their large size, Labradors tend to be very gentle, patient, and good-natured which make them especially well-suited to families with young and still learning children. The combination of their intelligence, eagerness to please their owners and gentle temperament, make them an excellent option when it comes to a pet for kids.
Training Labrador Retrievers daily is essential to ensure they remain obedient, calm, and content. The exact amount of time you need to put into it everyday to achieve the desired result depends on your own schedule and the age of the Labradors you are training. Generally speaking, it's recommended you dedicate at least 15-20 minutes a day for basic obedience and additional playtime. It's also beneficial to include mentally stimulating activities such as clicker training as well as short trips to the vet or groomers.
