Labrador Retrievers are among the most popular breeds in the US. They are considered to be intelligent, loyal, and great with children. Labradors are a sporting breed, so they require regular exercise and mental stimulation. These outgoing dogs are eager to please and respond well to praise and treats. Labradors have a double coat which requires weekly brushing, and regular visits to a groomer. Additionally, they have a tendency to gain weight, so as owners, we should be sure to control their diet and exercise.
Labrador Retrievers have thick, water-resistant double coats. Their outer coat is composed of short straight, stiff hairs and their inner coat is short, thick, and softer. Labradors tend to shed often, and their coats can be found in a variety of colors such as yellow, chocolate and black. Regular grooming such as brushing and trimming will help to keep a Labrador's coat looking its best. Additionally, Labradors need baths to help to keep their coat in good condition, though they only need bathing as needed unless they enjoy a swim in a pond or lake.
Labrador Retrievers should not be provided with human food as treats. Human food isn't designed to meet the specific nutritional requirements of dogs, and may contain substances that can be harmful. Additionally, food such as chocolate, candy, gum, onions, garlic, chives, avocados, nuts, and raisins should never be given to a Labrador Retriever, as they can contain toxins or pose a choking hazard. Furthermore, table scraps should be avoided as Labs are prone to gaining too much weight, which can be dangerous to their overall health.
Before getting a Labrador Retriever, it's essential to make sure you've bought the right supplies.
