Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are classed in the Sporting breed, which is one of the seven Groups as classified by the American Kennel Club (AKC). This group comprises of 28 different breeds of hunting dogs, who are known for their high energy and intelligence. Well-known breeds in this group include Cocker Spaniels, Retrievers, Pointers, and Setters. Labrador Retrievers hail from Newfoundland, where they were selectively bred to be the perfect hunting companion—hardy, dependable, and calm, with a great nose for tracking waterfowl.
Labrador Retrievers have a unique beautiful coat as their fur is both short and dense. The topcoat is composed of short, straight hairs while the undercoat is water-resistant. The coat of Labrador Retrievers can be brown, yellow, black, or some combination of these three colors. The colors are all allowed in the breed standard and all colors are "acceptable" for show purposes. Their coat requires a bit of regular brushing to keep it free of tangles and debris. They also shed a minimal amount of fur which can easily be removed through regular brushing.
Labrador Retrievers, like many other members of the canine family, require a balanced and nutritious diet to stay healthy and happy. Depending on their age, activity level, and health conditions, this diet may include high-quality dog food specially designed for labs, as well as small quantities of food items such as vegetables, fruits, meat, and fish. Keeping portion sizes appropriate for each Lab's needs is essential in making sure they get all the right nutrients. Fresh, clean water should always be readily available and small amounts of treats can be incorporated into their daily diet.
Before introducing your new Labrador Retriever to its home, you'll want to take some precautions to make sure your home is properly prepared. Firstly, try to puppy-proof the house as much as possible; clear away any small items or objects that may pose a choking hazard or that can be easily chewed or swallowed. If necessary, adjust the boundaries of what your puppy is allowed to explore in the home, and make sure any potential escape routes are blocked. Carry out an audit of potentially hazardous items outside of the home, such as chemicals or pools.
Labrador Retrievers are a large breed of dog, usually ranging from 55-80 pounds when fully grown. Generally speaking, male Labradors are larger than females, reaching a maximum height of up to 24 inches at the shoulder. And while some Labradors can reach heights of up to 27 inches, the breed standard is that they should not exceed 22.5 inches. Although their size varies, they tend to have excellent stamina and are known for their gentle and loyal nature.
Absolutely! Taking your Labrador Retriever running is a great way to make sure they get plenty of exercise and stay physically and mentally healthy. You'll need to have a good understanding of your dog's energy levels, and the amount of running that is right for them. It is not recommended to take Retriever puppies running until they reach at least one year of age and have fully developed their bone mass. Before heading out, make sure to check the weather conditions so you and your Lab have a comfortable and safe experience.
Labrador Retrievers generally get along great with kids; these friendly, loyal and intelligent canines enjoy spending time with their families and often prefer it. They are patient, playful, gentle and affectionate which makes them the perfect pets for children. Labradors are incredibly nurturing and have been used as therapy dogs to work with children with physical or emotional disabilities. They are also devoted to their family and have an ingrained loyalty and love which makes them great for children.
Labrador Retrievers are known to be among the most intelligent dogs. Their eagerness to please and loyalty make them a favorite among many pet owners, and they consistently rank high in intelligence tests.
