Labrador Retrievers are intelligent, loyal and affectionate dogs with an insatiable appetite for work and play. They have been traditionally used as working dogs for centuries, but today they also make amazing companions and family pets. Labradors are excellent swimmers and are generally good with children and other animals. They generally require a lot of exercise and need to be groomed regularly.
Labrador Retrievers have a beautiful, thick double coat that is designed to insulate them against cold temperatures. Notably, they are also known to shed a lot of their coat from time to time. Though regular brushing and bathing help reduce shedding, managing shedding in Labradors is an ongoing task. While the amount of fur they shed does depend on personal factors like health and age, the majority of Labradors are prone to shedding and require consistent grooming.
Labrador Retrievers should not be fed anything that contains chocolate, caffeine, grapes, raisins, licorice, large amounts of onions, avocado, macadamia nuts, or any other type of human food that is sweet, salty, or fatty. Additionally, they should not consume raw meats, eggs, or bones. Products containing artificial sweeteners, such as xylitol, should also be avoided. The high-calorie treats that are marketed specifically for Labradors should be avoided, as they can lead to obesity. Certain diets may require a veterinarian's prescription.
Preparing for your new Labrador Retriever should include acquiring food and treats, toys, as well as necessary supplies such as leashes, crates, beds and more. Consider also preparing a space in your home for your new pup to prevent any furniture or clothing from being chewed or dirtied up, start by blocking off particular rooms or sections of the house. Additionally, research vets and make sure you know your options for spaying/neutering, vaccinations and other necessary medical treatments.
Labrador Retrievers come in three main sizes: Standard, Medium, and Miniature. It depends largely on the age of your Labrador Retriever and the type of training you are looking to do. Young Labradors are particularly energetic and require more physical exercise than older Labradors, so they will need more of your time each day. If you are having your Labrador trained in basic obedience and behavioral techniques, then an hour or two a day should be sufficient. Anything above that and you may need to consider a professional trainer. However, if your goals include agility or specific advanced techniques, then you may need to dedicate more time each day.
