Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are a beloved breed! These hard-working and loyal dogs come with a host of interesting characteristics. For example, they are known to be excellent swimmers and are sometimes referred to as “water dogs”. On top of that, did you know that they are the most popular breed of dog in the USA? Plus, Labradors can range from black, to yellow, and even chocolate in color. Furthermore, they were originally used to help fishermen in Newfoundland, Canada in the 19th century.
Labrador Retrievers are primarily classified as a shedding breed, with some exceptions. Generally, the breed's fine, soft outer coat sheds seasonally, while the thick, coarse undercoat may shed year-round. On average, weekly brushing can help to manage the shedding, but professional grooming is recommended as needed. These friendly and energetic dogs prefer to have their coat groomed monthly. To further minimize shedding, daily brushing can be used in combination with bathing or special shedding products.
Labrador Retrievers are active and playful creatures, so when you are deciding what to feed them it is important to choose a food that meets their nutritional needs. It's important to remember that a Lab's diet should be high in proteins and fats that come from animal sources, such as chicken, lamb, beef, turkey, fish, or eggs. As with any breed, it's essential to make sure they get plenty of fresh water, since it helps to provide hydration and helps the digestive system stay healthy.
Preparing your home for your new Labrador Retriever is a great way to ensure that your pup has everything he or she needs to feel comfortable and safe in their new environment. First, make sure your home is free of any hazardous items like chemicals, broken glass, and anything else they could be tempted to chew on. You should also consider the size and strength of your puppy and baby-proof your home accordingly. Provide plenty of areas for them to explore and feel secure.
Labrador Retrievers are excellent family pets due to their reliable temperament, playful nature, and moderate size. Fully grown, these popular pups typically reach a minimum of 21.5 inches in height at the shoulder and up to 80 pounds in weight. While some Labs are larger or smaller, and male Labs as a rule are larger than females, the breed as a whole generally stays within a fairly consistent size range. Therefore, when considering adopting or buying a Lab, you should expect them to reach a height of no less than 21.
Labrador Retrievers need considerable exercise to stay healthy and happy. Generally, an adult Labrador Retriever should get around an hour of exercise per day, with two walks and some playtime. For young puppies, the exercise needs to be shorter and more frequent usually two shorter walks along with 15-20 minutes of playtime. As with any breed, exercise duration and frequency should be tailored to age and activity level so they are not overworked.
Labrador Retrievers are known for being incredibly friendly and easy to get along with, so chances are good that your Lab will get along with all of your other pets. Labradors are gentle and loving by nature, and with proper training and socialization from an early age, most Labs should be able to adjust easily to living with a variety of pets. Labs also have a lot of energy and often love playing with other animals, so providing them with the opportunity to do so and make friends can be a great way to make sure your Lab is happy and stress-free.
Training a Labrador Retriever requires effort, commitment, and patience. Though the Lab is an inherently eager-to-please breed, training them is not a matter of simply flipping a switch. With the right approach and consistency, training can be a positive and rewarding experience that deepens the bond between dog and owner. That said, some Labs may have difficulty remembering directions, so perseverance and positive reinforcement are key when it comes to teaching commands and using behavior modification techniques. Good trainers understand that training a Labrador Retriever isn't easy, but the effort is always worth it in the end.
