Labrador Retrievers are classified as a sporting breed, and are members of the Sporting Group. Bred to be retrievers of game for hunters during hunting expeditions, they are a medium-sized breed with a strong and muscular physique. Labradors are known for their intelligence and their playful nature, making them a great family pet. They have a short, silky, water-resistant coat, which comes in solid colors such as black, chocolate, yellow, gray, and white.
Managing allergies with Labrador Retrievers can be a challenge, but there are some things that can be done to limit or reduce the severity of symptoms. One way is to brush the dog frequently using a special brush that removes any pet dander or pollen that may be caught in the dog's fur. Additionally, washing the dog's bedding and other items with warm, soapy water on a regular basis can help keep allergens at bay. Also try to keep the cleaning of the house to a minimum to reduce the amount of dust caused by vacuuming.
Labrador Retrievers should not be fed chocolate, grapes, raisins, coffee, alcohol, or artificial sweeteners because of their toxic effects. It is also important to note that raw eggs, raw meat, bones, avocados, and macadamia nuts must be avoided. Furthermore, foods with a high-fat content should be kept to a minimum as they can cause digestive problems for the dog. Lastly, it's important to avoid human foods which may not be good for the dog's health, as well as any products containing xylitol as it is poisonous to them.

Extra items that may be desired would be a pet gate, digital camera, and an Identification tag for your dog. It is also important to find a vet and set up a vaccination schedule.
Labrador Retrievers are not generally considered small dogs. This breed typically weighs between 55 and 80 pounds, depending on their sex and height. Labradors usually stand around 21.5 to 24.5 inches tall, making them a medium-to-large sized breed compared to other types of dogs. While their size can make them appear intimidating to some, Labradors have the reputation of being among the most gentle, loyal, and even-tempered of all dog breeds.
A Labrador Retriever requires daily exercise in order to maintain its health and happiness. Depending on age, an adult Labrador Retriever should have a minimum of 60 minutes of exercise each day, while puppies require 30 minutes of exercise in addition to considerable play time. Generally, a 30-minute walk twice a day is sufficient for labradors of any age, however, be sure to consult with your vet regarding an appropriate and safe amount of exercise based upon your specific dog's size, age, breed, and health condition.
