They originated in Newfoundland in the early 1800s and were bred for search and rescue, sporting, and companionship. Most often, Labradors are seen in black, yellow, or chocolate coats with a thick double-coat that helps them withstand the elements. They have athletic, powerful builds and a tail carried low, earning them a reputation for an attractive, yet stoic appearance.
