Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds in the US, and for good reason. One of the most interesting things about them, is their intelligence. Labradors are known for their intelligence, obedience, and willingness to please. They are eager to please, which makes them easily trainable, and they respond well to rewards-based training. Labradors love playing games and solving puzzles, and are great partners in various activities. They also have an inquisitive side, and are known to get into mischief if not given an adequate outlet for their desires.
Although there are no guarantees when it comes to allergies, Labrador Retrievers generally do not cause more allergies than any other breed. However, some individuals may be more sensitive to any dog breed, so it's important to be aware of your own individual allergies and reactions if you decide to get a Labrador Retriever. In most cases, it's the proteins in pet saliva and dander that impacts those with allergies, which can affect all dog breeds and not just a specific breed.
Labrador Retrievers need a nutritious, high-quality diet to stay healthy and active. Your dog should be fed two to three meals per day, with amounts based on their size and activity level. An ideal diet consists of specifically-made dry food for adult Labradors that contain high-quality ingredients such as protein, fat, carbohydrates, nutritional supplements, and other essential vitamins and minerals. You can also supplement their diet with fresh vegetables, fruits, and fatty meats such as chicken, turkey, and beef.
Preparing for a new Labrador Retriever requires some initial effort, but the rewards are well worth the time and resources you put into it. First, do your research. Understand the basic needs and temperament of Labradors so that you can provide them with an environment to thrive. Next, get the necessary supplies that any pet requires. This includes food, toys, bedding, and proper identification. Finally, always establish a routine; provide your Labrador Retriever with structure and routine so they feel secure and comfortable.
Labrador Retrievers typically grow to weigh 55 to 80 lbs when fully grown and measure 21.5 to 24.5 inches from shoulder to paw. Their height at the shoulder ranges from 21.5 to 24.5 inches and they quite often exceed the American Kennel Club breed standard. In general, they grow to be the same height as a medium-sized dog, but they typically weigh more due to their muscular build. However, some Labrador Retrievers can be smaller depending on the size of the parents, where they originated from, and other factors.
Generally speaking, it is recommended that Labrador Retrievers get around 1 hour of exercise per day, of which at least 15 to 20 minutes should be dedicated to walking. This should be broken up into two shorter walks each day, or one longer walk of 30 minutes or more. Walking your Labrador Retriever will help to keep them healthy and to ward off any potential behavioral issues. It is also important to remember that, as the weather gets colder, it may be best to shorten the length of time spent walking your dog to around 30 minutes.
Labrador Retrievers can make great pets for first-time owners. They are known to be gentle, loyal dogs with an especially affable temperament. They typically learn basic commands fairly quickly, so are relatively easy to train. Labradors are also very sociable, making them an excellent breed for introducing to children and other pets. Of course, it’s important to consider the energy level of the specific Labrador, especially if there are young children or older adults in the house.
Training a Labrador Retriever is a rewarding experience that will help your pup learn obedience, have better manners, and become a better part of the family. Start by establishing a routine. Set aside specific times each day to train your Labrador Retriever in basic commands like sit, stay, come, and leave it. You can use positive reinforcement in several forms — treats, verbal praise, and petting — when your pup follows your command correctly. Make sure to stay consistent in your training, as your pup should learn that certain behaviors are expected regardless of the environment or situation.
