Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are incredibly popular dogs! They are known for being loyal, friendly, and easy to train. Some fun facts about Labradors include that they were originally bred to help fishermen in Newfoundland, Canada to pull nets and carry gear; that Labradors were only officially recognized as a breed by the English Kennel Club in 1903; that Labradors come in three different colors – black, chocolate, and yellow; and that there is a Lab in the White House – President Joe Biden's German Shepherd/Labrador mix, Major.
The Labrador Retriever has a medium-length, dense, straight coat with a water resistant inner layer. Depending on the color of the Labrador, the coat can range from black to yellow to a deep chocolate brown. Labradors often have a thick double coat, which gives them both their protection against colder temperatures and their striking good looks! This breed requires occasional grooming to keep the coat, along with its skin, healthy. The Labrador Retriever's coat is best kept mildly-sleek and tidy, while providing just enough room to remain comfortable.
Labrador Retrievers are active and energetic dogs and require a balanced diet to stay healthy. They need a diet that is high in protein and fatty acids, as well as the necessary essential vitamins and minerals. A quality dry dog food is a great option, as it contains all of the necessary nutrients in the proper amounts. To supplement their diet, you can feed them small amounts of cooked lean meats, vegetables, and grains. Treats are also a wonderful way to give your Lab a tasty snack while providing additional nutrients such as fresh fruits, yogurt, and hard-boiled eggs.
Buying essentials before getting a Labrador Retriever is essential to ensure that your pup can settle into his or her new home. A proper bed, collar, and leash are musts, as well as food and water bowls, a crate and/or kennel for training, high quality dog food, toys and treats, grooming supplies, waste disposal bags and a brush or comb specifically meant for your pup's fur type. Additionally, you may want to explore health-oriented items like heartworm preventative, tick and flea preventative, and pet health insurance.
Labrador Retrievers are not generally considered small dogs, as they are a medium to large-sized breed. Adult Labs measure anywhere from 21.5-24.5 inches tall at the shoulder and generally weigh 55-80 pounds. While this is certainly smaller than some other large breed dogs, such as the Great Dane or the Mastiff, it's typically larger than the majority of small breeds, such as the Chihuahua or a Pomeranian. Therefore, Labrador Retrievers are still quite a bit larger than the average small dog.
Absolutely! Taking your Labrador Retriever running is both an enjoyable and beneficial activity. Regular exercise is essential for optimal health for all dogs, and running allows your Labrador the opportunity to explore and get some fresh air. Before beginning this activity, be sure to have an appropriate leash and collar that fits your pup, as well as the necessary safety measures. Be aware of the temperature as running in excessively hot weather can cause heat-related illnesses in dogs. Additionally, keep a close eye on your pup and be aware of any signs of distress if they seem overwhelmed.
Labrador Retrievers are an excellent choice for families with children due to their loyal, friendly, and eager-to-please personalities. They are very cuddly and affectionate, and have endless patience for their young human owners. Labradors love to play and are highly intelligent, making them a great match for kids who like active fun and learning activities. They are also known for being reliable, usually friendly with other animals, and good with strangers.
Labrador Retrievers are widely considered to be amongst the most intelligent dog breeds. In psychological studies conducted by the American Kennel Club, Labradors frequently display quick learning and problem solving capabilities. In addition to their intelligence, Labs are generally very eager to please their owners and are highly trainable. This combination of characteristics makes Labradors generally well-suited for various forms of training, including obedience, agility, and search and rescue. All in all, Labrador Retrievers are certainly worthy of their reputation as smart dogs.
