Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are considered to be a part of the Sporting Group of dogs. These medium-sized dogs are a loving, friendly, and loyal breed that make excellent family companions. They are known for their intelligence, patience, and happy-go-lucky natures which make them great for families, but they can also be used in a variety of roles like hunting, search and rescue, rehabilitation, tracking, and agility. Labrador Retrievers can also be therapy dogs, providing assistance in medical or counseling facilities.
Although Labrador Retrievers do not shed excessively, they have a thick coat that contains a fair amount of dander. Unfortunately, they are not considered hypoallergenic, so they may not be the best choice for people with severe allergies. While these dogs produce fewer allergens than most breeds, the very nature of their thick coats means that dander may accumulate on the fur and be spread through the home.
It's important to remember that Labrador Retrievers are prone to being food-motivated, and as such, exercising portion control is key when it comes to what you decide to feed them. As a rule of thumb, it's best to avoid anything with too much sugar, fat, and salt as these are not healthy for them to eat in excess. Also, refrain from feeding them human food such as dairy products, certain types of nuts, and certain fruits like grapes and raisins, as these can be toxic to them.
To ensure that your home is ready for your new Labrador Retriever, the first step is to puppy-proof your home and yard. You'll want to secure anything that may pose a choking or ingestion hazard, keep hazardous items out of reach or locked away, and make sure you're pet-proofing your furniture with protective coverings. You'll also want to invest in a securely fenced backyard for playtime and bathroom breaks.
Generally, Labrador Retrievers reach their full size between 1 and 2 years of age. Fully grown, they range from 21.5 to 24.5 inches in height and will weigh between 55 and 80 pounds. However, some Labradors may be larger or smaller than average depending on genetics and diet. They are considered a medium/large breed and many are intelligent, active, and have a friendly and loving nature. Labradors also tend to benefit from regular exercise, obedience training, and plenty of healthy treats to keep healthy and happy.
Labrador Retrievers absolutely love to swim! It is in their nature and can be seen as a natural instinct when around deep bodies of water. They have webbed feet, a thick waterproof coat, and an otter-like tail that aids them in propelling through the water with ease. Labs enjoy it so much that they can keep up the activity for long periods of a time, enjoying the coolness on hot summer days.
Labrador Retrievers are excellent choices for first-time owners. They are known for their intelligence and willingness to learn, making them highly trainable. Their kind and loyal nature makes them extremely good companions, and their sociable nature makes them a great fit for new dog owners or families with children. Labradors can be quite energetic, but their energy levels are easily managed with regular exercise and socialization at an early age. Despite their large stature, Labradors are also known to be gentle, loving, and kind.
Yes, Labrador Retrievers are considered to be very intelligent dogs. They have strong problem-solving abilities, are easily trainable and often understand commands quickly. Many studies have shown that Labrador Retrievers are more intelligent than the average dog breed and they consistently rank in the top 5 of the most intelligent dog breeds. Labs are often used for many types of service work ranging from search and rescue to guide and assistance dogs. Much of this is due to their high level of intelligence and their eagerness to learn.
