A Labrador Retriever is a type of sporting dog highly regarded for its intelligence, good-natured disposition and its mischievous yet endearing behavior. They make excellent family pets, have an extraordinary ability to learn, and respond well to training. Males typically range in size from 21.5 to 24.5 inches in height and weigh in at 65 to 80 pounds, and females measure 21.5 to 23.5 inches in height and weigh 55 to 70 pounds. Labs have a thick double coat which can come in three main colors: black, yellow and chocolate.

Labrador Retrievers are generally considered to be medium to large-sized dogs, rather than small. On average, Labradors weigh between 55-80 pounds for males and 55-70 pounds for females. While Labradors have a strong propensity for high energetic activities, the American Kennel Club recommends that running with them not begin until the dog is at least 18 months of age.
