Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers, one of the most popular breeds of dogs, are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and friendly demeanor. As fun facts, Labradors are the only breed to have heavy coats and webbed feet, which make them excellent swimmers. On top of that, their sense of smell is so acute that they can be trained to smell certain cancer cells in the human body. Labradors won't forget any item they learn, and amazingly they can even recognize up to 250 words. They commonly live up to 10-12 years, and up to 16 in some cases.
Labrador Retrievers are considered to be a low-allergen breed. However, it is important to keep in mind that no breed of dog is completely hypoallergenic. All breeds of dogs have dander and saliva, which can cause an allergic reaction in some people. Having said that, Labrador Retrievers are considered to be one of the better breeds for people with dog allergies because they do shed less than other breeds and their coats contain less dander. Additionally, their fur is usually shorter and denser than other breeds, reducing the risk of an allergic reaction.
Labrador Retrievers should not be given large amounts of high-fat, salty or sugary treats as they can lead to an unbalanced diet and can cause problems from obesity to diabetes. Some human foods like chocolate, onions and garlic, avocado, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, lemon/limes, raw yeast dough or moldy food can also be toxic. In addition, foods not to give are bones that they can choke on, and table scraps that may contain unhealthy ingredients.
Labrador Retrievers do require certain special requirements to stay healthy and happy. They need a fair amount of exercise around an hour a day whether it be running, playing fetch, or taking long walks with their human. It's also important to feed them a high-quality diet with plenty of protein so they can maintain their strong muscle mass. Socialization is another important factor in their development, so it is important to make sure they have plenty of interactions with humans, other dogs, and other animal species. Grooming should be done regularly, including regular brushing and baths.
While Labrador Retrievers are not generally considered small dogs, their size can vary depending on the bloodline they are from. On average, Labrador Retrievers typically range from 21 25 inches in height and weigh between 55 75 lbs. While some owners have had smaller sized Labradors, this is considered an exception to the breed not the rule. Generally speaking, Labrador Retrievers are considered to be larger dogs in comparison to smaller breeds like Pomeranians, Yorkies, and Toy Poodles.
It is recommended that your Labrador Retriever get 30 minutes to an hour of exercise each day, including walking. Since Labs can become easily bored and over-exercised, a good rule of thumb is to walk him for approximately 20 to 30 minutes at a time, preferably twice a day. However, always consult your veterinarian to determine the optimal duration and number of walks for your particular dog. Additionally, you can break up the walks with other play or activities that have different mental and physical benefits.
Labrador Retrievers are known to be particularly good with kids. They are so affectionate and patient that they make great family pets. In addition, Labradors are loyal, intelligent, and easy to train, making them ideal for households with children. They also love to play and exercise, which can help to tire out lots of children's energy! Labrador Retrievers are the perfect breed for getting children involved with the responsibilities of caring for a pet, as proper care for a Labrador involves daily exercise, food, and lots of love.
Training Labrador Retrievers requires an average of 30 minutes per day. Each dog is different and they require varying levels of attention and training. For basic commands, such as sit, stay and come, you can start with three 10-minute sessions per day and work up to one long session of 30 minutes. This will help your Labrador Retriever to stay engaged and allow them to practice their new commands. It's important to keep the sessions fun and rewarding so that your lab can learn quickly and enjoy the process.
