Labrador Retrievers are a friendly, smart and gentle breed of dog that make great family companions due to their patient and loving nature. They require regular exercise, and need plenty of mental stimulation to prevent boredom, making them a great choice for active households. Labs can often be seen participating in a variety of activities including flyball, agility, tracking, obedience, and retrieving. Labs learn quickly and respond well to positive reinforcement during training. Proper socialization is also important during their puppy years, so they can become comfortable in various situations as they grow.
The Labrador Retriever's coat has a smooth outer coat of short-medium length with a thick, dense undercoat. The Labrador Retriever's coat can range in color from black, chocolate, and yellow. Its fur is usually waterproof and soft overall, it has a pleasant feel to the touch. The shedding is minimal and regular brushing will help keep the coat free from tangles and mats making it easier to groom and maintain.
Labrador Retrievers should not be fed onions, garlic, avocado, caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, xylitol, raw meats, bones, spoiled food, and other human foods. These foods can cause gastrointestinal irritation, cardiovascular problems, and can potentially be fatal. Furthermore, feeding Labradors any type of moldy food can lead to poisoning, and grapes, coins, raisins, and certain nuts can cause kidney damage. If you see any of these foods in your Lab's food dish, it should be immediately removed and not be fed.
Preparing your home for your new Labrador Retriever can be a fun process! Make sure that you set aside a designated area for your pup, outfitted with a comfortable dog bed, food and water bowls, and plenty of chew-proof toys.
