Questions & Answers
A Labrador Retriever is a medium-sized, short-haired, highly intelligent breed of dog. Standing at up to 24” tall and weighing between 65 and 80lbs, they are extremely playful and gentle. They have been popular family pets for decades due to their laid-back nature and for making good guard dogs. Labradors are very trainable and their obedient, friendly, and loyal nature make them the ideal family dog. They enjoy physical activities such as swimming, playing fetch, and running, as well as mental activities such as puzzles.
The Labrador Retriever has a short, dense coat that is distinctive for its sheen and texture. Its soft, water-resistant topcoat and thick, insulated undercoat are unique and provide exceptional protection from the elements. Its colors can vary from black, yellow, and chocolate brown and it has a thick, insulated tail that helps protect them from cold weather. Labrador Retrievers typically have an abundant mane that can be brushed, or left long. They are a moderate shedder that only requires occasional maintenance to maintain its beauty.
Labrador Retrievers should not be fed chocolate and/or products with chocolate in it, as chocolate is toxic to all dogs. Other items that should not be fed to Labradors include grapes, avocados, garlic, onions, and macadamia nuts. Additionally, dogs do not need table scraps; feeding Labradors human foods can be hazardous and lead to digestive upsets. Labradors should be given food specifically made for them. If you don't have access to high-quality commercial dog food, opt for cooked fresh meats, brown rice and vegetables instead.
Preparation for your new Labrador Retriever should start long before you bring him home. This includes researching all of his nutritional needs, selecting the right food, getting the appropriate bedding and toys, and enrolling in puppy training classes. Make sure you have all the necessary supplies such as collars, leashes, and a crate to promote proper potty training. Familiarize yourself with the particular breed, and discuss any potential health concerns with your veterinarian. Researching all the necessary shots, annual check ups, and other treatments your pup may need is an important part of preparation.
Labrador Retrievers typically grow to be quite large dogs; they usually range from between 55 to 80 pounds when fully grown, with males typically being larger than females. Their height usually ranges between 21.5 to 24.5 inches at the withers. It is important to note that Labradors can take up to eighteen months to reach their full size. Nutrition, exercise, and genetics can also influence the size and growth of any Labrador Retriever. With early socialization and proper training, Labradors can be wonderful, loving family dogs.
Labrador Retrievers are naturally enthusiastic swimmers who thoroughly enjoy a dip in the water. It's a common belief that Labradors were bred in Newfoundland as fishing dogs due to their natural affinity for swimming. While they can be taught to swim at a young age, most puppies seem to just take to the water naturally, exhibiting a strong natural instinct for their aquatic environment. Swimming for Labradors is a great way for them to release energy and stay in good physical shape. It's also a great way for them to keep cool in hot weather.
Labrador Retrievers are incredibly good-natured dogs that make great family pets. They are especially known for their patience and playfulness, which makes them excellent with kids. Their friendly, loving demeanor makes them a great companion as they are well-known for being loyal and affectionate to both kids and adults. Moreover, their gentle nature and willingness to please make them a great fit with families with children, as they do not tend to be overly barky or nip at small kids.
Labrador Retrievers are widely regarded as among the smartest of all dog breeds. They were initially bred to help fishermen in Newfoundland, Canada retrieve lost or netted fish, and have since become one of the most popular dogs in the United States. Their intelligence is evidenced by their ability to learn complicated commands and tasks, often following such instructions with ease and quickness. This intelligence enables them to excel in a wide variety of jobs, from hunting and tracking, to being service dogs or simply providing companionship to their owners.
