Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world and are classed as part of the Sporting Group. They are a medium-size breed that originated in Newfoundland in the early 1800s. Their gentle and loyal temperament makes them an ideal family pet. Labradors are intelligent, easy to train, and highly sociable dogs that love to be part of a family. They are versatile and can be trained for different activities, including hunting, herding, search and rescue, and even as a therapy dog.
Labrador Retrievers are not considered to be hypoallergenic, meaning that their fur and dander can trigger allergies in certain individuals. Labradors typically have a thick, double coat of fur, and produce dander, which is a fine, airborne debris produced by fur and feathers which can cause allergic reactions in some people. While some people may find Labradors to be a hypoallergenic breed, they may not be suitable for owners who suffer from allergies as the dander and fur can exacerbate them.
Labrador Retrievers should not be fed foods such as onions, garlic, chocolate, raisins, currants, fruits with seeds, fatty and salty foods, and large, hard-to-chew objects. These ingredients can cause digestive issues, such as acid reflux and indigestion, that can contribute to the development of more serious health problems. It is also important to avoid feeding them human foods such as potato chips, chips, cakes, and sugary sweets.
Before getting a Labrador Retriever, it is important to stock up on essential items such as a high-quality dog food, an appropriately sized collar and leash, toys, treats, a crate, puppy-proofing supplies, and grooming supplies. Additionally, it's also important to consider getting items to help train and bond with your new pet such as a clicker or whistle, training treats, and puzzle toys.
Labrador Retrievers typically grow to a medium size, ranging anywhere from 21.5 to 24.5 inches in height at the shoulder and weighing between 55 and 80 pounds. However, there are cases where Labradors can be larger or smaller than the standard if they are mixed with larger or smaller breeds. Ultimately, the size of a Labrador Retriever is determined by the individual, their genetics, and the environment in which they are raised.
Labrador Retrievers, often referred to as "Labs," love to swim! This breed is particularly well known for their powerful strokes that keep them afloat, particularly with their webbed feet. Labs are often utilized by fishermen and duck hunters in waterfowl hunts due to their aptitude at swimming. Although some owners may have concerns for their Lab's safety when they swim, it is usually nothing to worry about. These dogs were born to swim, and will often persistently seek out water to whet their thirst for a good swim.
Generally speaking, Labrador Retrievers are considered to be a good choice of breed if you wish to bring up a family pet which will be great around children.Labradors are affectionate, loving and gentle, which makes them great for young kids or toddlers to be around. They are known for being incredibly loyal and often form a strong bond with their human family and are protective of them. Typically, Labrador Retrievers are also good with other pets in the house and will do fine in group settings. In addition they are eager to please their owners and are highly trainable.
Indeed, Labrador Retrievers are very intelligent dogs! In fact, the AKC (American Kennel Club) ranks Labrador Retrievers as the third most intelligent dog breed, behind the Poodle and the Border Collie. Labrador Retrievers are also considered one of the most ‘trainable’ and obedient breeds, largely due to their natural curiosity and excellent memory. Their eager-to-please nature means that they are often used as search-and-rescue dogs, guide dogs, narcotics and explosives detection dogs, and more.
