They have been used as pampered indoor companions for centuries and are known for their intelligence, gentle nature, and love of attention from their owners. Maltese dogs do best with regular exercise and near-constant companionship, as they become anxious when left alone for too long.
The Maltese breed's coat is both unique and distinctive. It is a very fine, silky coat that is predominantly white with accents of either light to dark lemon and/or dark to rich brown. Not only does the coat stand out due to its unique coloring, the fur is non-shedding, which is a major boon for allergy sufferers.
