Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting things about Malteses is their extraordinary intelligence. They have been ranked as one of the top 10 most intelligent breeds of dogs and are known for their quick learning capabilities and keen problem-solving skills. Malteses are also very friendly and affectionate, making them an ideal companion for any member of the family. Despite their small size, they are fearless and courageous with an adventurous spirit. They can adapt to almost any environment, from city living all the way to outdoor explorations.
The Maltese coat is a unique one since it is long, silky, and non-shedding. As it is only one layer, it is very lightweight and rests one to two inches off the body. The hair is usually white, but it can also come in cream and can lighten in certain areas. Maltese coats need to be brushed every day in order to keep its shine and keep it from tangling. Because they have such a luxurious coat, they also require regular grooming such as hair trims, clipped nails, and ear cleaning to help keep them looking their best.
Maltese dogs should not be given human food or table scraps as these can cause nutritional imbalances and digestive issues. Foods that are high in fat such as bacon, sausages, cheese, liver, and gravy should be avoided as they are difficult for them to digest. Certain foods can even be poisonous to their system such as chocolate, onions, garlic, and grapes. Additionally, bones should be avoided, as they can splinter, get caught in the throat, and cause serious health issues.
Before bringing your new Maltese home, it is important to prepare your home for them. Create a safe environment by blocking off any potentially hazardous areas, such as stairwells, and young children's rooms. Make sure the space is free from any objects or fixtures that your Maltese could chew on or become entangled with. Clean and sanitize any surfaces that could come into contact with your pet. Get familiar with a few basic commands and find out what type of treats they prefer.
Malteses are a small breed of dog, typically growing to a maximum of 8 to 10 inches in height and 8 to 15 pounds in weight. Male Malteses will typically grow slightly larger than their female counterparts. The lifespan of a Maltese is from 12 to 15 years, with many living to 18 years with proper care. Although small in size, the Maltese can be quite a feisty, spunky, and loyal pup. That being said, they still love to spend lots of time with their owners.
Taking your Maltese running is certainly possible, but special considerations must be taken into account. First, it's important to remember that Maltese dogs are tiny, with a maximum height of just 10 inches, so they are not built for longer running distances. Secondly, because they are prone to health issues, like respiratory conditions, running could put them at greater risk. Thirdly, the Maltese breed tends to have a more short-legged, tippy-toe gait, rather than the bouncy heel-toe gait associated with running.
Generally, Malteses are very friendly and eager to meet new pets. They bond well with other animals, and usually are not shy or aggressive when first meeting them. In most cases, they do get along with other pets; however, it depends largely on their individual temperament and the individual temperament of the other animal. You may need to supervise their first encounters and provide positive reinforcement when they interact appropriately. Other steps such as providing appropriate exercise and stimulating activities that involve all of the pets can help the Maltese get along with the other animals even better.
Malteses have a reputation as being one of the more intelligent breeds of dogs. They are easily trained, remember commands quite well, and have been known to perform tricks with ease. They have a lot of intelligence and an immense desire to please their companions, making them an ideal breed for active families. Malteses also possess a calm and gentle disposition that makes them quite loyal and devoted to their owners. While they may not have the same level of smarts as other breeds, they are still higher in problem solving and learn commands faster.
