Questions & Answers
Malteses are classified as a toy/companion breed of dog. Generally standing from 6-10 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing less than 10 pounds, Malteses are among some of the smallest and most beloved dog breeds. Their long, white, silky, coats and their unmistakably gentle and loving nature make them extremely popular companion dogs. Despite their small size, they are quite sturdy and thoughtful to their owners, faithfully following them around the house. They can live many years, usually a lifespan of 12-14 years.
Generally speaking, Malteses are considered to be non-shedding. They are small-breed dogs that typically have a single-layer coat, which means they don't shed much, if at all, since the coat doesn't contain lower, coarser guard hairs. Malteses also lack an undercoat, which further cuts down on shedding. Although they don't shed, Malteses do need some grooming and occasional haircuts. These dogs also need to be frequently brushed to help reduce shedding.
A Maltese is a delicate, toy-sized dog, so it's important to choose a diet specifically designed for small breeds. Look for high-quality formulas that are made with natural ingredients, like real meats, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables. Make sure the ingredients are easily digestible, too. An ideal diet for a Maltese should also be nutritionally balanced and fortified with vitamins, minerals, and other important nutrients essential for the health and wellness of your pup.
When bringing home a Maltese it is important to make sure you are prepared and have all the essentials. An appropriate-sized crate for your new pup, to help with potty training and provide your dog with a safe space; food and water dishes for their meals; a comfortable, plush bed; a collar and leash; chew toys and interactive toys; a brush for brushing your pup’s luxurious coat; healthy treats for rewards; safe grooming shears, and a brush for the hairballs; a shed control shampoo; and a wide variety of cleaning products.
Malteses come in three sizes according to the American Kennel Club: Toy, which weighs under seven pounds; Miniature, which weighs between seven and twelve pounds; and Standard, which weighs over twelve pounds. Additionally, depending on the individual dog's conformation, Malteses may be larger or smaller than the breed standard. Maltese sizes are determined more by the length and look of the body and can sometimes result in unusual sizes between the Toy, Miniature, and Standard size categories.
Maltese dogs need a moderate level of exercise. According to the American Kennel Club, they require daily walks or playtime to stay active and burn energy. These small dogs may not need as much exercise as bigger breeds, but they should still be taken on at least two brisk walks, a few play sessions, and some off-leash exercise each day. Ensure these activities are fun and engaging as Malteses may become restless if bored. A good way to ensure your pup gets enough activity is to take them to the park or join organized playgroups.
Malteses can make loving and loyal companions for families with children, often forming strong bonds with the whole household. These friendly pooches are incredibly gentle and affectionate, making them great playmates for children of all ages. They don't need a lot of exercise so they're content hanging out with the family instead of being taken outdoors. Additionally, their small size means they won't knock over small children. Training and socializing early on is important to ensure that your Maltese gets used to being around kids and knows how to behave around them.
Training your Maltese can be both rewarding and challenging. To start, positive reinforcement is key. When your Maltese is learning something new, like potty training or tricks, reward good behavior with praise or small treats. Make sure to keep yourTraining sessions short and have lots of patience. Be sure to keep your voice and tone upbeat and encouraging when praising and correcting your Maltese. Practice makes perfect, so try to be consistent with your training. You should also have realistic expectations for what your Maltese can learn and remember.
