Questions & Answers
Malteses are an energetic breed, originating from the Central Mediterranean and often seen as companion dogs. In terms of size, they only grow to a maximum of ten inches at the shoulder, but their thick and luxurious coats often make them appear larger. One fun fact about Malteses is that they have no undercoat, so they won't shed heavily like other breeds. They actually remain virtually odorless, making them great for indoors and allergies. Another fun fact about Malteses is that they are known for their intelligence and high levels of trainability.
The Maltese coat is truly unique and quite special. It is a long, silky coat that reaches the ground, though it can also be trimmed slightly. It can be either straight or wavy. The Maltese coat is very thin but very abundant, giving the dog a fluffy, cloud-like appearance. Additionally, the coat should be bone white or a light, creamy ivory. The Maltese coat should also be very finely textured and glossy, making them look like cuddly little teddy bears.
Feeding your Maltese can be a bit of a challenge, but it doesn't need to be. The best way to ensure your Maltese stays happy and healthy is to give them a diet complete with lots of quality proteins, carbohydrates, and essential vitamins and minerals. Look for a premium dry dog food specifically made for small breeds such as the Maltese and select one that has naturally occurring sources of the nutrients that your pup needs. In addition to dry kibble, you can supplement their diet with canned formulated food.
Preparing for a new Maltese can be a fun and exciting experience. First and foremost, it’s important to gather the necessary items such as a crate for sleeping, food and water bowls, chew toys, and a collar and leash. Additionally, it is beneficial to research basic training techniques to help establish a bond and understanding between the new Maltese and its owner. Providing an adequate amount of playtime with your Maltese is also important for bonding and entertainment purposes.
Generally, Malteses are not considered big dogs because they are extremely small and have a maximum weight of only 7 pounds. They are approximately 8 inches in height, have a pup-like face and generally are around 8-14 years in life span making them a great choice of companion breed. Although they are small in size, they are very active and alert. This makes them good watchdogs or alert dogs that bark when they sense something out of the ordinary.
The amount of minutes per day that your Maltese should be walked will depend on their age and activity level. Generally speaking, adult Maltese should be walked for 30 minutes per day, while puppies and senior Maltese should be walked for 15 minutes per day. Keep in mind that walking your Maltese for longer periods and varying the intensity of the walks can help them stay healthy and fit. During these walks, make sure to keep your Maltese on a leash and take them to areas where they can be safe.
Malteses are an excellent choice for first-time owners due to their sweet and loving disposition. They can be easily trained, loyal companions, and they aren’t considered an overly dominant breed. However, like all breeds, Malteses have their own individual personalities and needs that should be taken into consideration when selecting a pet. They can be a demanding breed that require regular grooming to keep their coats healthy and need plenty of love and attention to remain happy and content.
Training a Maltese is a process that depends upon the individual dog. Generally speaking, they are very intelligent and eager to please making them relatively easy to train. However, this is a toy breed of dog and is known to have a "big dog" attitude; consistent and positive reinforcement along with lots of patience is the key to successfully training Maltese. Training should begin from puppy-hood and should cover basic commands such as "sit," "come," "leave it," and "down.
