Questions & Answers
Malteses are a small breed of dog, usually weighing no more than 7 pounds and standing around 8-10 inches tall at the shoulder. This breed is among some the oldest toy breeds of dog, originating in the country of Malta (hence their name) and was a popular companion of royalty throughout Europe. Described as being lively and playful, yet gentle, Malteses are known for their gorgeous white coat and sparkling black eyes. A Maltese's devotion and affection to their owner make these dogs stand out as wonderful lap dogs and great companions.
The Maltese coat is luxuriously long, silky and profuse. The lack of an undercoat makes the Maltese immune to the weather. The hair of this breed hangs almost to the ground and is generally of a uniform texture and color except for solids from which lighter tips and custom cutting have been done. The Maltese coat is non-felting and non-thinning, so it requires regular grooming and bathing to remain healthy.
Maltese dogs are incredibly sensitive to certain kinds of food, so be sure to keep your pup's diet balanced and healthy. While it is important to understand that all dog breeds require specific nutrition, Maltese dogs are extra sensitive to certain types of food due to their sensitive digestive system. As such, foods that are generally not recommended for Maltese dogs include: Dairy products such as cheese or ice cream, spicy food, fruits with seeds, onions, garlic, chives, chocolate, raw eggs, raw or undercooked meats and fish, unwashed fruits and vegetables, and table scraps.
To become the best parent for your Maltese pup, it is important to provide regular socialization, exercise, playtime, and plenty of positive reinforcement for desired behavior. Dedicating time to daily interactive activities, such as obedience training with rewards, is a great way to strengthen the relationship between pup and parent. To ensure the pup’s health and well-being, they should also be fed a balanced and nutritious diet, groomed regularly, taken on vet visits, and have access to safe chew toys and plenty of fresh water.
Malteses come in a wide range of sizes, ranging from very small to very large. The American Kennel Club recognizes three sizes of Malteses, which are toy (under 7 pounds at full maturity), miniature (7 to 12 pounds at full maturity), and standard (over 12 pounds at full maturity). In addition to the size categories recognized by the AKC, there are also "teacup" Malteses, which are smaller than the toy size.
Yes, you can absolutely take your Maltese running! While there are several considerations to keep in mind when running with your pup, such as checking their temperature to ensure they don't overheat, it can absolutely be a great bonding activity and help give them some extra exercise. Make sure that you select a running route with a hard surface, such as concrete or asphalt, as this is gentle on their small paws and will also give them better grip and traction.
Malteses are a great family dog! These small, silky-coated canines are affectionate, friendly, and typically very gentle with children. They do not shed much, are easy to train, and are playful and spirited companions. As with all breeds, Malteses should still be socialized early and properly trained to help ensure they are comfortable around new people and locations. Generally, Malteses enjoy spending time with their human families and have a high battery life, making them excellent playmates for small kids.
Training your Maltese requires patience and consistency. Be sure to keep the lessons short, as they will quickly become bored. Start by teaching basic commands such as sit, stay, and come. Begin in an environment with minimal distractions and reward positive behaviour with treats and verbal praise. As they master the basics, progress to more complicated tasks and continue to temper their enthusiasm with positive reinforcement. Additionally, it may be beneficial to enroll your Maltese in group classes, as this helps to socialize your pet and allows them to focus with no environmental distractions.
