Questions & Answers
Maltese dogs have been cherished for centuries. They were originally bred in Malta in the Mediterranean region in 3000 B.C., where they remain highly popular. They’re the oldest Toy breed. Maltese also have a continuous coat, meaning that they do not shed, making them a great choice for those who suffer from allergies. In addition, these small dogs only weigh between four and six pounds! They are often known as clowns for their entertaining nature and admirable charms.
Malteses are indeed a non-shedding breed of dog. They typically do not shed much, if at all, due to their hypoallergenic coat. Since Malteses have a natural long coat, it is best to brush them every day to keep it looking healthy and groomed. If their coat is not groomed often, it may start to matt and can become uncomfortable for the dog. Regular brushing will not only help keep their coat looking beautiful, but can also reduce the amount of loose hair and dander that the Maltese produces.
It's important to be mindful of dietary restrictions for Malteses as they are a breed that tends to gain weight easily. Human-grade food should be avoided as this can lead to nutritional deficiencies and health problems. This includes any kind of processed foods like chips, candy, cookies, etc. Table scraps should also be avoided since they typically do not contain the vitamins and minerals a Maltese needs. Additionally, cooked bones should be kept out of reach since these may splinter, leading to severe respiratory problems.
Before bringing home a Maltese, it is important to have the right supplies. Essentials to consider include a soft-bristled brush and comb for grooming; a flea comb and combing shampoo to help keep their hair free of tangles; a safe, comfortable bed; a collar and ID tag for walks; toys to play with; and a secure, properly-sized carrier for transportation. Additionally, having plenty of their preferred food, treats, and a quality food bowl is important.
The size of a Maltese puppy can range significantly. Generally, an adult Maltese will mature in size to between 4-7 pounds (2-3 kgs). However, individual pups may be slightly larger or smaller. Because the average Maltese lifespan is between 12-15 years, it may be difficult to tell exactly how big your pup will grow until they reach their full adult size. For this reason, it can be important to monitor pup’s health, eating habits, and activity levels to ensure they maintain a healthy lifestyle as they grow.
Malteses are well-known for being small, lively and eager for all sorts of activity. They often display and exhibit a constant need to be on the go. Malteses are generally active dogs who enjoy regular exercise such as walks, hikes, or play sessions. They are also known to be excellent swimmers and they love to run and explore. They can live happily in many different types of homes, although they can become destructive in the absence of regular physical and mental stimulation.
Malteses are friendly, gentle dogs that can generally get along with children if they are introduced and trained properly. They have a reputation for being great family pets as they love being around humans and are quick to adapt to the environment. Malteses have a forgiving, gentle nature which makes them a good companion for kids who may be learning how to interact with animals. They can even be great playmates since they have a lot of energy and like to move around and stay active. With proper socialization skills and patience, Malteses make great pets for families with children.
The amount of time you need to devote to training your Maltese depends on a few factors, including the age of your pet, the desired outcome of your training, and the amount of prior experience your pet has with structured training. Generally, training sessions should last 10-15 minutes and should occur 1-2 times per day, for a total of approximately 20-30 minutes per day. Additionally, you should take time each day to review previously taught behaviors to ensure that your Maltese hasn't forgotten the techniques.
