Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting things about Malteses is that they are incredibly intelligent and are easily trained. Malteses are also quickly able to pick up on cues and learn from their environment. Additionally, they are loyal and loving, making them great companions. They require a great deal of attention on a daily basis which means they are perfect for someone who has a lot of time to devote to their pet. Malteses also have a air of independence and curiosity about them which makes them a really fun and unique breed.
Managing allergies with Maltese dogs can be done by taking the proper precautions. Make sure they're groomed regularly, with regular brushing and bathing to reduce dander and fur that can trigger hypersensitivity for some people. Vacuum or mop frequently and beware of dust mites that can be found in carpets, rugs, and furniture. When bringing a Maltese into a home where someone is severely allergic, block off certain areas of the house as much as possible to reduce allergen exposure.
Malteses primarily eat a combination of wet and dry dog foods that are specifically formulated to meet their dietary needs. Wet food can provide additional hydration and help keep their coats shiny and healthy. Dry kibble will help them maintain strong teeth and gums. It can also provide the nutrients they need. Some supplemental wet foods can also add essential vitamins, proteins, and minerals to their diet. Additionally, fresh fruits, vegetables, and small amounts of lean meats (cooked first) can be offered several times a week as occasional treats.
Maltese do not have any specific requirements above and beyond general care guidelines for other breeds. The American Maltese Association (AMA) has issued some breed-specific guidelines that cover items such as socialization, diet, medical check-ups, and dental care. Generally speaking, Maltese are a healthy breed and have few specific requirements. They do, however, require regular grooming, including regular haircuts, baths, and nail trimming. Additionally, Maltese enjoy walks and playtime more than other small breeds, so exercise should be incorporated into their daily routine.
A Maltese's size is highly dependent on its home environment and nutrition, with Malteses typically growing to between six and ten inches tall at the shoulder, and weighing between four to eight pounds. On average, Malteses remain within the same size range throughout their adult life; however, Malteses who are well taken care of due to good nutrition, exercise, and sufficient environment can grow to a larger size compared to ones who do not receive the same care.
A Maltese should have at least 30 minutes of exercise per day to stay healthy and keep their energetic spirit going. Walking is an excellent form of exercise for them and should be done every day in addition to other activities. You should make sure that your Maltese gets at least 15-20 minutes of consecutive walking every day, though you can certainly add to this amount. It's best to split up their walks into two segments: one in the morning and one in the evening for example.
Generally, Malteses get along very well with children. They are incredibly loving, smart, and loyal dogs and are not usually shy or standoffish around kids. Since they are small, they are easily able to be scooped up by little hands, and many of them love the attention. They are also calm and gentle dogs that are patient and accepting of any attention a child gives them. They are a great breed for first-time owners and families, as they are easy to train and tend to be obedient.
The amount of time needed to train a Maltese each day will vary, as every dog is different and has different levels of energy and skill. Generally speaking, however, you should plan to devote at least 10-15 minutes per day to actively training your Maltese. This could include using verbal commands, providing treats, and reinforcement in order to teach your pup to obey your commands. Additionally, it is important to spend additional time playing with your pup, exploring new activities, or simply bonding with them each day.
