Questions & Answers
Malteses are a small breed of dog known for their friendly, gentle personalities. They may seem delicate due to their size, but they are usually quite active and love to run around. While Malteses have a short coat, it's important to note that they require regular grooming and do require quite a bit of care. They do best in an indoor setting and require plenty of activity to stay healthy. In terms of exercise, they require regular walks and playtime. As Malteses love human interaction, they are best suited for family homes with lots of attention and care.
The Maltese coat is a luxurious, silky, and curly outer covering that requires special care and attention to keep it looking its best. The hair is hypoallergenic, making it well suited for those with allergies, and it comes in a range of colors including white, black, fawn, and blue. It is very fine and can easily tangle so regular brushing is essential to maintaining its condition. Noted for its high shine, some owners may need to make use of a grooming spray to ensure that it remains glossy.
Malteses are small, friendly dogs with unique dietary needs. In general, it's best to avoid giving human food to your Maltese, because it can be difficult to know how the components of the food may interact with the dog's own digestive system. Some human foods may be toxic for your Maltese, giving them an upset stomach, anemia, or other serious medical issues. Specifically, refrain from giving Malteses grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, chocolates, candy, anything with caffeine, and alcohol.
Before you bring your new Maltese home, it's important to take some time to prepare your living space for your new pet. First, check your home for any potential hazards such as wires or toxic plants that could be harmful to your pet. Next, take the time to purchase the necessary items you will need for your Maltese, such as food and water bowls, a soft bed, safe toys and treats, a collar and a leash, a carrier for transportation, and grooming tools.
Malteses come in a variety of sizes, with the Official Standard being 8 to 10 inches tall at the highest point of the shoulder and weighing between 4 and 8 pounds. While it is possible for any Maltese to fall outside of this range, most are found within this size range. The smaller end of this size range is often referred to as a Toy Maltese, while the larger end of this range, just under the 10-inch mark, is often referred to as a Teacup Maltese.
Malteses are in fact very active dogs. As companion dogs, they love to be around their families. They enjoy long walks and playing fetch, or running and chasing after a ball. That said, they don't need an abundance of rigorous exercise and can be just as content with a brisk walk around the block. Despite their small size, their energy levels and enthusiasm remain high.
Malteses are incredibly beloved pet companions of all kinds, and make wonderful family dogs in particular. Like most dogs, they are loyal, affectionate, and are always eager to please. They get along very well with children, and create strong bonds with their owners. Plus, they love socializing, so having guests over won't phase them. Among their traits, Malteses also enjoy a good playtime with the entire family, being known to have a zest for life and an upbeat attitude.
It really depends on your specific Maltese and its age. For puppies, experts recommend no more than 10 minutes per day of training to keep them from getting overwhelmed. For adult dogs, between 20 and 30 minutes of training per day is sufficient. However, if you are focusing on more in-depth training, like teaching a Maltese tricks, you may want to consider longer training sessions. Since each Maltese is different, it's always best to start slow and gradually increase the amount of training time as your Maltese becomes more comfortable and advanced.
