Questions & Answers
Maltese are a small breed of dog that have been popular since the middle ages. They are known for their lovely silky white coat and dainty, friendly temperament. These dogs are surprisingly active and need daily walks and exercise to stay healthy and happy. They have an average lifespan of 12-14 years and many live much longer. It's important to keep their coats well groomed to prevent mats and to prevent skin diseases. Since they have a sensitive stomach, they should be fed a high-quality, balanced diet.
The Maltese coat is uniquely striking. Characterized by their long white fur with no undercoat, the characteristic coat of a Maltese is quite distinctive. In addition to their recognizably plush fur, the Maltese also have a shaggy face giving them a playful appearance regardless of age. They are a low-shedding breed, which makes their coat easy to care for. Regular brushing and professional grooming are essential to maintaining the characteristic look. As a bonus for their owners, Maltese tend to stay quite small, usually only reaching around 7-8 pounds at full growth.
Malteses have very small digestive systems which digest things much differently than the digestive system of larger dogs. Because of this, they should not be fed anything that could potentially be dangerous to them. Large pieces of meat or hard snacks can be a choking hazard for Malteses so it's important to break them down into smaller sizes. Additionally, foods that can be toxic to other larger dogs may be even more fatal for Malteses, such as chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, avocados, macadamia nuts, and artificial sweeteners.
Before welcoming a new Maltese into your home, it is important to be prepared for your pet's needs. Start by researching the breed and finding out the type of food, exercise, and vet care that your Maltese will require. Create a safe and welcoming environment in your home, free from hazards such as poisonous plants, cleaning supplies, or small objects that can be swallowed. Gather the necessary supplies such as food and water dishes, a bed, a leash and collar, and toys. Make sure to have a brush for grooming and the necessary paperwork for the vet to register your pet.
Malteses are generally considered to be a small breed of dog, weighing anywhere from 4 to 8 pounds and standing 8 to 10 inches tall. While they may not be considered big in relation to other types of dogs, they can provide plenty of love and companionship. Despite their relatively petite size, a Maltese can still enjoy the same activities as larger breeds, including off-leash playtime, long walks, and plenty of cuddles.
Generally, it is recommended that Maltese dogs be walked at least 30 minutes a day. However, due to their size, Maltese may require a bit less vigorous of an exercise requirement than a bigger breed. If you're able to provide your Maltese with a few more minutes of activity per day, it will be beneficial. That being said, an hour of daily exercise is a good rule of thumb for a Maltese, depending on their individual needs. Walking is a great form of exercise and one that can help keep your Maltese healthy and fit.
Malteses can generally be socialized to get along with other pets in the household, however some may be more dogor cat-aggressive than others due to their small size. As with introducing any animal into a new environment, it should be done gradually to ensure the Maltese feels comfortable and safe in the presence of other pets. Monitor their interactions with other animals and address any aggressive behavior that may develop to ensure a safe and happy home environment with everyone. Additionally, proper socialization of the Maltese with other animals from an early age can greatly reduce the risk of inter-pet conflict.
Training your Maltese can be a fun and rewarding process with the right approach. Begin with positive reinforcement when introducing commands and behaviors. Reward desired behaviors with treats and praise. Be consistent and patient with your training sessions. Start by focusing on basic commands like 'sit' and 'stay.' Once they are comfortable with these commands, introduce more complicated ones. Additionally, socialize your Maltese to new environments and situations. This will help them become more comfortable with changes in their environment and explore in a safe and healthy way. Incorporate physical exercise into your pup's weekly training.
