Malteses are a small, loving, and affectionate breed of dog. They are usually quite friendly and gentle with people, although their small size may make them more prone to being startled. They require minimal grooming, only needing occasional brushing and nail trimming. They are also known for their intelligence, making them easy to train. They typically do not bark excessively, but can become protective of their family and home. A Maltese should get a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise per day and should not be left outdoors unsupervised for long periods of time.
