Questions & Answers
Malteses are small, friendly species that originated in the Mediterranean many centuries ago. Their coat is snow white, but is often distinguished by its long, silky fur. It's a fact that this breed of dogs does not shed, making them an ideal choice for people with allergy issues. Malteses are also known for their intelligence, friendliness, and playfulness. When properly trained, they make excellent pets for families. Not to mention, Malteses love to be part of the family and enjoy receiving plenty of attention.
The Maltese coat is beautifully soft and silky, usually white although there can often be light biscuit or lemon colored shading, and features long fur that needs frequent maintenance in order to stay protected against the elements. Generally, it's a single coat, double-coated puppies have been seen but they are much rarer. The coat should be trimmed every six weeks, to prevent excessive matting and tangle build-up, and it should be trimmed to within half an inch of the body.
Malteses are an active breed of small dog that require a balanced diet of nutritious and calorie-dense foods. They should eat high-quality proteins such as poultry, lamb, fish, and eggs, as well as complex carbohydrates including sweet potatoes, brown rice, and oats to stay healthy. In addition, Malteses should receive a variety of vegetables to get the vitamins and minerals they need. Fruits and vegetables such as blueberries, carrots, pumpkin, and applesauce can provide them with additional vitamins and supplements.
Preparing for a new Maltese is an important step in ensuring that you and your pet have a happy, healthy relationship. Before bringing your Maltese home, gather everything you will need to care for them, including food and water dishes, a comfortable bed, a collar and leash, and toys. Research proper Maltese care, including feeding guidelines, exercise needs, and grooming requirements and make sure you get a full health check from your veterinarian.
Malteses typically grow to be quite small, rarely exceeding eight inches tall and weighing just 4-7 pounds. Their manageable size makes them ideal for those who prefer an apartment or small house pet. But despite being small, they are full of energy and not short on personality! Furthermore, Maltese have long coats that require daily brushing to remain tangle-free and they may require frequent trips to the groomer for a haircut. Nevertheless, all of these factors aside, they make wonderful companion animals that will bring joy to the home.
While there is no single recommended number of minutes per day to walk a Maltese, it's important to provide the breed with regular exercise to ensure they stay healthy and active! Generally speaking, an adult Maltese should get at least 60 minutes (1 hour) of exercise every day, divided into two or three walks. During these walks, consider varying the terrain, speed, and direction you take your Maltese in to provide a well-rounded challenge. Puppies should get an appropriate amount of exercise for their age, which would typically involve shorter walks.
Yes, Malteses can be an ideal dog breed for families with children. They are known for their intelligence, loyalty and affection, making them an excellent choice for children to interact with. This breed is also friendly, gentle, and patient, meaning they are usually comfortable around kids of all ages. Zebras are also highly adaptive and mellow, making them blow more tolerant of loud noises, like when young children are playing or excited. Malteses can even learn useful tricks to show the kids, like rolling over or playing fetch.
The amount of time you should dedicate to training your Maltese each day will depend on both the dog's age and energy level. Generally, young Malteses need up to 30 minutes of active training per day to learn the basics, while older Maltese may be content with shorter, more frequent training sessions of 10–15 minutes. Set aside at least half an hour each day to practice and reinforce commands in order to create a well-trained, obedient pup. Make sure your Maltese always has a positive experience while training, and end each session on a good note.
