Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting things about Malteses is their adaptability. Not only are they known for their loyalty and love of companionship, but they're also intelligent, alert, and easy to train. As a breed, Maltese dogs are highly adaptable, easily adjusting to new environments. They make excellent pets for families as they're do well with children and other pets. On top of that, Malteses are low-shedding and low-allergy, making them a great option if you're looking for a small and snuggly pooch.
The Maltese coat is typically long, and silky in texture. It comes in a variety of colors including apricot, white, red, and tan. Maltese coats feature a double layer of hair. The outer layer is straight along the top and sides, and grows long along the back and stomach of the dog. Meanwhile, the underlay is short, soft, and fluffy. This unique combination of layers provides a medium-length coat over a soft and plushy body. A unique part of the Maltese coat is that it does not shed.
Maltese dogs have particular nutritional needs that can best be fulfilled through a diet specifically tailored to small-breed dogs. The best diet for your Maltese involves a high-quality dry kibble that is uniquely formulated for small breeds with reduced calories and fat. The kibble should be supplemented with the occasional feed of natural, lean proteins such as lean chicken, turkey, fish, and lean beef. You should also add vegetables to the diet, such as sweet potatoes, spinach, broccoli, and carrots to provide your Maltese with a more balanced diet.
Before purchasing a Maltese, it is essential to buy the necessary supplies to ensure a safe and comfortable home for your furry friend. Some of the most important things to have include a leash and collar, harness or vest, food and water bowls, food specifically designed for toy breeds, pet toothbrush and toothpaste, toys, a grooming set such as a brush and comb, and a dog bed. The appropriate sized crate or kennel should also be purchased to provide a secure space for your pup.
Malteses typically come in the same general size across the breed. Usually, a Maltese will stand 8-10 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh 4-7 pounds when fully grown. This makes the Maltese a good choice for those with living arrangements where space is limited. Interestingly, a Maltese's size doesn't impact their personality they are always feisty and adventurous! They have a longer lifespan than some other breeds too 10-15 years is common.
An ideal exercise program for your Maltese should include at least 15-30 minutes of exercise a day. How you structure this is up to you, but a combination of walks and playtime is ideal. Try to break the exercise up throughout the day and consider pace and intensity light to moderate activity is best for most Maltese breeds. Ideally, they should get a combination of leash walks and off leash playtime in a safe, secure area. If your Maltese enjoys swimming, this could be a good form of exercise as well.
It is generally accepted that Malteses do get along with other pets, although their small size and sensitivity might make some owners feel that these dogs are better kept away from larger pets. Proper socialization is essential in order to ensure that a Maltese is comfortable around other animals and that it can maintain a harmonious relationship with its furry companions. It is important to remember that as with any pet, individual temperament and prior experiences can have an effect in how it interacts with other animals.
The amount of minutes per day required for training a Maltese depends on age, experience, and any special behaviors needing to be addressed. Generally speaking, it is recommended to allow at least 15-20 minutes each day for basic training, such as obedience commands and potty training. On days when focusing on more advanced behaviors or trick training, a minimum of 30 minutes is suggested. Also, as most Malteses are very active and prone to getting bored easily, having some play time each day is imperative.
