Questions & Answers
Malteses are a very interesting breed of dog! They are mostly known for their thick, white coats, but the breed is actually a great all-around companion. Not only are they clever and eager to please, they are also quite agile and love to play. What fascinates most people though, is Maltese's social nature they form strong bonds with their masters and are very attached to their human families. Malteses are also known for being intelligent and independent, so they can be a bit of a challenge to train.
Malteses are considered to be a hypoallergenic breed because they produce very little dander, which is the main allergen for dog allergy sufferers. They also have an extremely low level of shedding as compared to other breeds, making them an ideal breed for someone with allergies. Additionally, Malteses are considered to be a great option for households with children because they tend to be very gentle and friendly.
Malteses are small, delicate dogs, so it is important to know what foods they should not be consuming in order to keep them safe and healthy. Generally, it's best to avoid giving your Maltese table scraps and fatty foods such as processed meats, hot dogs, butter, too many treats, bread dough, or sugary foods. Malteses should also never be given any type of chocolate, as it can be toxic to them. Grapes, raisins, and anything containing xylitol should also not be fed to your Maltese.
Although a few breeds of Maltese have unique dietary, grooming, and exercise requirements, most Maltese are considered relatively easy to care for due to their small size and low activity levels. Many of the special requirements involve coat care and grooming, such as regular brushing to prevent matting and occasional trims or shaves. Maltese may also need occasional dental care, such as dental cleanings and the occasional tooth brushing to prevent tartar build-up. Exercise requirements are fairly minimal, although daily walks can help keep your Maltese active and healthy.
The size of your Maltese puppy will depend on various factors, such as diet, exercise, and of course genetics. On average, a healthy Maltese puppy reaches anywhere from 7 to 10 inches in height and weighs anywhere from 4 to 8 pounds when fully grown. Nevertheless, size can range on either end of the spectrum, depending on the individual pup and its background. Therefore, it's important to provide your Maltese with plenty of nutritious meals, daily playtime, and regular vet check-ups to ensure that they reach their full potential.
Malteses are a lively and active breed and require an appropriate amount of exercise to ensure their good health. Generally, they need a lot of mental and physical stimulation every day, which may include walks, running, fetch and playtime in the yard. They may also enjoy activities such as agility shows, herding and, for those living in colder climates, mushing. For adult dogs, it is suggested that they get around 30-45 minutes of exercise daily.
Malteses are known for their naturally sweet temperaments and affectionate personalities, making them an ideal companion for children. Studies have indicated that Maltese dogs are not only good with kids, but often enjoy play time with them. They are often quite gentle and can even be trained to be quite submissive in order to protect them from harm. As small and energetic dogs, Maltese dogs are also very good at playing fetch and other simple games with kids. Additionally, their intelligent nature means they can be taught a variety of tricks, providing ongoing entertainment for your kids.
Training a Maltese requires patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Start with simple commands like “Come,” “Sit,” and “Stay,” by showing your dog what you expect and rewarding them with treats, praise, or a game. Training sessions should stay short and fun so your Maltese doesn't become bored or overwhelmed. If possible, involve all family members and pets in training so that everybody understands the expectations. Use consistent language, gestures, and rewards so that your Maltese understands what they are achieving.
