Questions & Answers
Malteses are incredibly friendly little dogs! What makes them so special is that despite their small size, they are incredibly brave and full of life. They were originally bred by the Knights of St.John in the 1500s and were originally used as guard dogs. Malteses are also incredibly intelligent and are easy to train. They make wonderful companions for families of all ages. Fun facts about Malteses include what a “Maltese cross” is named after. The Maltese cross symbol originated from the original order of soldiers, the Knights of St.John.
The Maltese coat is unique and distinctive, with a long single layer of silky hair somewhat akin to the texture of silk. It typically hangs to the ground, and can be likened to a silken river when it moves in the wind as it drapes over the body of the dog. Its color is uniform with no white markings and usually comes in either black or white. The black has a rich-blue tint, while the white has a soft-white appearance and can sometimes display a creamy hue near the neck and head area.
Malteses should not be fed anything that would be considered to be a choking hazard, such as rawhide or too many treats. Sugary human foods and table scraps can also lead to obesity, and Maltese owners should watch their pup’s diet carefully. Many foods we eat are toxic to Malteses, such as chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, and raisins. It is essential that Malteses are given dog food specifically designed for their breed as this will provide essential vitamins and minerals in the correct proportion.
Before welcoming a Maltese into your home, it's essential to purchase food, toys, a bed, treats, a water and food dish, a grooming brush and nail clippers, a collar and leash, bedding, and a canine first aid kit. Additionally, you'll want to ensure your home is safe and free of any hazards like dangerous plants, accessible wires, or anything a curious Maltese could potentially get into.
Malteses come in a variety of sizes ranging from tiny teacup sizes to standard sizes. Teacup Malteses stand at approximately 5 inches tall and weigh about 2 to 4 lbs. Standard sizes can range from 6 to 8 inches in height and typically weigh in around 3 to 6 lbs. All Maltese tend to have dark eyes and can have either long or short coats depending on the breed. The general breed standard is that a Maltese should be 10 inches tall or less and weigh 7 lbs or less, however the size can vary depending on the particular dog and breeding.
Maltese dogs are a very active breed and require frequent exercise. How much exercise they need will depend on several factors, such as their age, size, and strength. Generally speaking, adult Maltese should have at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day, split between two or three short walks or other activities. Puppies and younger dogs will need more play time and higher intensity exercise, such as running or long games of fetch. All Malteses should be given regular opportunities to explore and sniff as this helps stimulate their mental wellbeing and can also help to reduce problem behaviors.
Malteses can be a great pet for first-time owners, as they tend to be affectionate and loyal. Malteses are relatively low maintenance, don't require a huge amount of exercise, and have very low barking tendencies. Though they are a small breed, they are full of personality and energy and enjoy spending time with their owners. They are generally gentle and friendly around people, making them ideal for households with young children. Maltese owners must be aware and patient about grooming needs as they do require regular brushing and trimming to prevent mats in their fur.
It is difficult to answer the question about how many minutes per day you need to train Malteses, as the amount of time may depend on the individual dog and their needs. However, for general training purposes, you should aim to engage with your Maltese for at least 10-15 minutes a few times a day. This will help keep your Maltese's mind engaged and allow them to learn new commands and behaviors.
