Questions & Answers
Malteses are small, energetic dogs belonging to the Toy Group. Their small size makes them a great choice for many households, as they require little exercise and are conveniently-sized dogs. Maltese dogs have silky white coats, white plumed tails, and black eyes, making them one of the more unusual and interesting members of the Toy Group. They are intelligent and loyal, and they enjoy interacting with their owners, as well as strangers. They are playful and alert, and they have been known to be especially good with children, making them an excellent choice for families.
The Maltese coat is quite unique, boasting of a long, silky texture that lies flat against the body. While the coat can vary in color from white to cream, the purebred Maltese breed is usually a brilliant white. It's medium in length with no undercoat, helping keep the Maltese cool during hot weather. As a single-layer coat, Maltese owners mostly enjoy easy maintenance. While Maltese do require brushing to prevent tangling of the coat, they typically don't need to be bathed often as their coats hardly hold any odor.
Malteses are a small, energetic breed, and what they eat has a major impact on their health. It's important to feed your Maltese the proper diet to keep them healthy and fit. It's best to avoid giving your Maltese human food as these are usually high in fat, sugar, or salt all of which can harm the Maltese's health in the long run. Additionally, look out for foods that are toxic to dogs such as garlic, onion, chocolate, grapes, and raisins.
Preparing your home for a new Maltese is an important step in ensuring your pet's comfort and safety. Begin by dog proofing your home, removing electrical cords, breakable items, and anything else that could pose a hazard to your new furry friend. You may also want to invest in baby gates, to restrict the pup from accessing any hazards you may have missed. Additionally, be sure to provide your pup with comfortable bedding, food, and a few chew toys.
Malteses come in a variety of sizes, from about 4 to 10 pounds. Otherwise known as a Teacup Maltese, the 4 pound variety usually stands between 4 and 6 inches tall and is an extra-small breed. When fully grown, an average sized Maltese generally stands between 7 and 8 inches tall and weighs between 5 and 10 pounds. Larger Malteses usually stand 8 to 9 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh anywhere from 9 to 10 pounds. As far as size goes, most Malteses will stay within those general benchmarks, though exceptions may occur.
It is recommended that you walk your Maltese at least 30 minutes per day. Doing so will provide your pet with the necessary exercise and stimulation they need to stay physically and mentally healthy. Additionally, it can help to reinforce positive behavior, stimulating your Maltese to learn by providing a stimulating environment. A longer walk of an hour in the morning, early evening or at night when the temperature is cooler is also beneficial.
Generally, Malteses are wonderful, loving companions when interacting with other pets. They tend to easily make friends with other dog breeds as well as cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs. However, like with any animal breed, it is important to introduce them slowly and carefully in order to provide a safe and calming environment. It is also important to monitor the initial interactions to make sure there are no issues. If introducing a Maltese to another pet, providing plenty of treats, toys, and positive reinforcement can encourage them to make a strong bond.
Training a Maltese can seem a daunting task, but it does not have to be! To start, you should establish some basic rules for your Maltese such as area boundaries, times to eat and exercise, etc. By setting up clear expectations, your dog will understand acceptable behaviors and limits from the start. Then break down the training into manageable steps – start with basic commands like sit, stay, come, and heel. Each step should be practiced over and over again to make sure your dog is effectively learning the commands.
