Questions & Answers
Maltese dogs are one of the oldest breeds of dogs that have been documented in Europe they date back to the 5th century B.C.! They were even considered sacred animals in Malta for some time. They have long, luxurious coats that come in a variety of colors and can grow to an average height of 9-10 inches. What's even more special about Maltese dogs is that they don't shed, making them an ideal breed for allergic people. They were bred for companionship, so they thrive and remain incredibly loyal when properly trained.
The Maltese coat is a very distinct and unique one. It has no undercoat and is a single layer of silky, flowing hair covering the entire body. This coat of fine white hair, sometimes described as 'fluffy', is non-shedding and hypoallergenic for people who suffer allergies. It is also very resistant to matting and tangling, making it very easy to care for. The texture is more like that of human hair than that of the common pet fur, and the hair is usually groomed to cascade over the body and around the face.
A healthy diet for a Maltese should consist of high-quality dry dog food specifically designed for small breeds. For an adult Maltese, look for a kibble that is nutrient-dense, containing ingredients such as protein, fat, carbohydrates, and healthy fats like fish oil. Be sure to choose a kibble that is appropriate for your Maltese's age and activity level. You can also supplement your dog's diet with a few healthy treats such as fruits and vegetables, cooked eggs, cooked meat, and plain yogurt.
Preparing for your new Maltese is an important step before bringing one home. Start by getting their space ready for them. Make sure you have the right setup for them, including food and water dishes, toys, beds, and crates. Next, shop for all the supplies you need, such as food, treats, and grooming supplies. Research grooming techniques for your breed and set up a routine that works best for you. Make sure any products you use are specifically designed for your breed. Research any health issues or complications that particular breed may have to better monitor your pet.
Your Maltese puppy will likely grow to a height of around 6-7 inches and weigh between 4 and 7 pounds when fully grown. There is no exact size that a Maltese puppy will reach as individual puppies of the same breed can vary in size. Generally, Maltese are known as toy dogs due to their smaller size, so you can expect your pup to stay relatively small even as an adult. However, Maltese puppies can generally be classified as a small breed of dog.
Malteses are among the smallest breed of dog which makes them ideal house pets, but they still need regular exercise to stay healthy. Depending on your lifestyle, you should plan to take your Maltes around your neighborhood/local park for walks twice a day with each walk lasting for at least 20 minutes. If that is not possible, consider playing fetch or frisbee in a secure area as well. Malteses love mental challenges such as hide-and-seek and treat puzzles which you can do to keep your dog engaged and active.
Generally, Malteses are incredibly affectionate and friendly with children, making them an ideal family pet. They are known for their loving and loyal nature and often form strong bonds with their owners and families. Malteses have an innate desire to please their owners and therefore can be an excellent companion for kids. They enjoy playing and cuddling and put their loveable personalities to work. With their small size, Malteses are gentle and non-aggressive, and have lots of patience for energetic children.
Training a Maltese dog is not much different than training any other breed. It is important to consistently use positive reinforcement and offer rewards for desired behaviors. Take your time to properly socialize them by introducing them slowly to different people and animals. Establish a clear set of rules and boundaries for your Maltese and provide them with consistent and clear cues and commands to follow. Make sure they get plenty of exercise and mental stimulation throughout the day. Keep the training sessions short and fun, and use lots of positive reinforcement to motivate your Maltese. Reward them with treats and praise when they do something good.
