Questions & Answers
Malteses are a toy breed which is part of the Bichon family, and originate from Mediterranean islands. They are small in size but have a bold and confident personality. Malteses are highly intelligent animals and are easily trained to respond to basic commands. They are typically friendly and outgoing with people, as well as other dogs, and make for great family pets. Due to their long and silky white fur, Malteses require frequent grooming and brushing to keep their coats clean and tangle-free.
The Maltese coat is one of the most distinctive and recognizable, having a single layer of silky, white, long hair. It often hangs down to the floor, providing an elegant look to the breed. The hair is wavy and should have no appearance of thickness, except over the shoulders. This specific breed of dogs require a great deal of care and brushing to keep their coats looking beautiful and healthy. Without regular maintenance, their long and curly hair can become matted and tangled. For this reason, it is recommended to have the Maltese coat trimmed professionally at least once every eight weeks.
It is best to avoid feeding Malteses human snacks, such as chips, processed foods, and chocolate, as these can cause them to gain weight and develop health problems. Additionally, while small amounts of certain vegetables are safe for them to consume, too many can cause digestive issues. Fruits and commercial non-toxic treats are an acceptable snack, as long as they are given in moderation. Common household foods such as raw bones, avocado, and cooked onions are also riskier, as they can cause severe medical problems.
Before getting a Maltese, it's important that you get a few essentials. First, make sure you have a comfortable crate or bed for your pet to sleep in. You'll also need to pick up food and water dishes, some leash and harnesses, and plenty of toys to keep him or her entertained. Additionally, you should have grooming supplies such as a brush, shampoo, and scissors. Finally, it's also a good idea to pick up waste bags and an ID tag (or have your pup microchipped) to ensure they're safely returned if lost.
Malteses come in a variety of sizes ranging from Toy to Large. The size of a Maltese usually depends on the weight and height of the dog. Toy Malteses are usually less than 7 lbs. and 8” tall, while Large Maltese are typically 15-20 lbs. and 10-12” tall. Although male dogs can be up to 6-7 lbs. heavier than females, the weight difference can be very small when considering toy and small sizes. Female Malteses may have a slightly longer coat in comparison to males.
Absolutely! Taking your Maltese running can be a great way to get exercise for both yourself and your pup. It's important to note that Maltese dogs have small legs and can tire easily, so it might be better to start with a brisk walk and gradually work up to running. Start slowly, no more than 15-20 minute sessions at a time, and check in with your Maltese to make sure they don't become too tired or sore. Remember to bring water for your dog and to stop if they seem to be struggling.
Generally, Malteses are known for their friendly nature and do get along with kids. As long as they are socialized and exposed to children while they are young, they can usually get along well with them. Besides, Malteses are small in size, so they can be quite gentle and even protective when playing with children. When it comes to Maltese puppies, they tend to be quite excitable and playful, so it's important to ensure that they are supervised when playing with kids.
The amount of time that you need to dedicate to training your Maltese will vary depending on the specific needs of your pup and the level of skill that is desired; however, in general, it is recommended to spend at least 10 minutes every day working on basic obedience training. This can be split up into several sessions if necessary. Depending on the size of your dog and the activeness of their breed, you may need to spend an additional 20 to 30 minutes a day involving them in physical activity, such as playing fetch or going for walks.
