Questions & Answers
A Maltese is a small breed of companion dog. The ideal Maltese is known to be gentle, outgoing, and trusting towards strangers. Originally bred in the Mediterranean area, the long, silky, white coat of the Maltese is non-shedding and hypoallergenic. They are highly active, playful, and intelligent, and easy to train with a teacup size of around 7 9 pounds at maturity. The Maltese is an excellent choice for those living in apartments or small homes as they can adapt to indoor living and do not require a large space for exercise.
The Maltese coat is characterized by its smoothness and silky nature. It is traditionally a long, straight, and flat coat that mostly lacks an undercoat. This unique trait gives it a glossy, luxurious look that has made the Maltese breed quite popular. The coat is also composed of long locks around the face that form a distinctive "lion cut". Generally, the Maltese coat is usually white, however there are some breeds that may have cream, light tan, or even light brown patterning. During regular grooming, the Maltese coat should be brushed regularly.
Malteses typically have a diet consisting of premium-quality dry food that is designed to meet their specific nutritional needs. Wet canned food may also be given, but only in small amounts. Regardless of what type of food is chosen, it should be 100% natural, with no artificial preservatives, colors, flavors, or additives. To ensure that they get all of the vitamins and minerals they need, a quality supplementation regimen should be provided. To keep their teeth healthy, a diet consisting of crunchy, natural treats like raw fruits and vegetables is ideal.
Maltese do not have any special requirements that are unique to the breed. They do, however, need the regular care a pet requires, including proper nutrition, exercise, grooming, vaccination, and veterinary visits. The Maltese benefit from quality food to maintain a healthy weight, regular exercise for physical and mental stimulation, frequent grooming to keep their coat in good condition, and regular veterinary checkups to keep them in top physical condition. Regular vaccinations are also necessary to prevent illnesses such as rabies, distemper, and parvovirus.
It's hard to predict the size of your Maltese puppy. Generally, the breed tends to stay between 4-7 pounds when fully grown, but individual pups can be a bit larger or smaller. The best indicator of your puppy's size can be their parents, so if you can, try to meet them or ask for their information if you plan on adopting or purchasing a puppy. Genetics play a large role in determining the size of a puppy, and it can take up to one to two years for the full size of your puppy to be reached.
It is generally recommended that a Maltese should receive at least 30 minutes of exercise, such as walking, each day. This should include a combination of leisurely strolls and bursts of more strenuous activity, as the Maltese is an active breed that can become restless if not walked regularly.
Generally speaking, Malteses are known to get along well with other pets. With proper socialization and training, they can learn to recognize and play with fellow animals in the environment. Malteses have a friendly, gentle nature, so welcoming another pet into the home doesn't usually pose problems. They tend to be very friendly and enjoy being around other animals. We recommend that when introducing a new pet, it is important to do it gradually and in a controlled and safe environment. This allows the introduction of one pet to the other to be gradual and without any chance of aggression or confrontation.
The amount of time needed to properly train a Maltese on a daily basis varies depending on the goals and the specific training approach. Generally speaking, Malteses need at least 15 minutes of structured training each day in addition to 10 minutes of daily exercise and frequent opportunities for play. To achieve more advanced levels of obedience or develop certain behaviors, more time may be necessary. But in general, a minimum of 25 minutes a day devoted to exercise and training activities should cover the needs of most Malteses.
