Questions & Answers
Malteses are intelligent, cheerful, and playful dogs that make great pets. They usually range in size from 5 to 8 inches tall and 3 to 7 lbs. in weight. Malteses are also known for their long white coats, which should be brushed daily to keep them looking their best. They're good-natured and very social pets, and they love getting attention from their owners! In terms of exercise, Malteses don't need a lot, but they do enjoy going for walks and playing in the park.
The Maltese coat is one of a kind in the dog world. It is made up of a soft, silky textured outercoat and an underlying layer of dense fine hair. The hair does not shed and there is no undercoat. The texture of the coat is described to be similar to that of a rabbit and the hair stands out somewhat straight or falls into slight waves. The coat is usually white in color, sometimes with light cream or tan markings such as the "blaze" marking on the forehead.
Malteses are a breed of small, fluffy companion dogs and one of the oldest European breeds. Therefore, it is important to provide them with a high quality diet that meets their nutritional needs. The optimal diet for a Maltese is one that is based on high quality, real animal proteins like deboned chicken, turkey, fish, and/or egg as the primary source of protein. A balanced diet that also includes high-quality carbohydrates like brown rice, oatmeal, and sweet potatoes is important for providing the necessary energy they need to be active.
Before bringing home a Maltese it is important to make sure you have some key essentials for their care and wellbeing. You'll need a brush to help keep their coat untangled and groomed. A regular visit to the groomer is also a must if you want your pup to stay looking their best. A quality food and water bowl will help prevent stomach upset and provide your pup with the necessary nutrition. Nail clippers, flea/tick treatments, treats, and chew toys are also essential for your Maltese's proper care.
Malteses come in a variety of sizes, ranging from tiny Toy Malteses who often reach up to 7 inches in height and 4 pounds in weight, to Standard Malteses who can grow up to 10 inches tall and weigh 10-14 pounds. As with many purebred dogs, these sizes correspond to a specific standardized size class. Toy Malteses are Class 4 size and Standard Malteses are Class 10 size.
Though not a breed specifically bred to swim, Maltese dogs are known to be energetic, intelligent, and highly trainable. For these reasons, many Maltese owners find that their beloved pooches enjoy a swim, whether that's in a pool, lake, or river, just as much as they do other activities. Due to their strength and agility, it's best to start training your Maltese to swim in shallow waters before gradually moving outwards.
Malteses can generally get along with other pets, provided they're introduced properly and taught how to interact with one another. This breed is friendly, outgoing, and generally loving towards other animals, so they can make good additions to any home. However, given the smaller size and delicate nature of the Maltese, it's important to take care in establishing boundaries. With gentle guidance from a responsible adult, Maltese dogs can learn to play and socialize with other cats, dogs, and other animals in a safe and respectful manner.
Training a Maltese is doable, but the amount of effort necessary depends on each individual dog. As with all breeds, Maltese puppies may be easy to train as they are generally eager to learn; however, older Maltese may be less inclined to pick up on commands due to their already entrenched habits. It is wise to make sure your Maltese is receiving consistent reinforcement and that you are taking the time to introduce them to new things and commands slowly.
