Questions & Answers
Malteses are a unique breed of dog that have a fascinating history. Dating back to ancient times, these dogs had been held in high esteem by generations of European monarchs, including King Frederick of Sicily who became the first to grant these dogs with the title "Royal Dog of Malta". What makes Malteses particularly fascinating is their tendency to bond with their owners and form close relationships with them. They can be trusting and loyal companions and, because of their small size, they can often be found lounging on a lap or in the crook of an arm.
Malteses are often deemed hypoallergenic due to their long, white coats and low dander counts, however, all dogs produce dander and saliva which can cause an allergic reaction in some people. Therefore, there's a small chance that a Maltese may cause an allergic reaction in an individual, however this is fairly rare. It may be beneficial for people with allergies to spend some time with a Maltese before committing to having one as a pet. That being said, Malteses tend to cause fewer allergic reactions than other dog breeds making them appealing for people with allergies.
Maltese dogs should not be fed human table scraps, as they can contain too much fat and spices, which can upset their stomachs. It's also important to avoid giving them foods that contain chocolate, raisins, grapes, onions, garlic and other vegetables and fruits with toxins, as these can be toxic to them. The same goes for xylitol, which is an artificial sweetener that's used in many sugar-free products and can be toxic to Maltese dogs.
Preparing your home for a new Maltese can seem like a big job, but it doesn't have to be! Begin by researching breed-specific resources that explain the Maltese breed and its characteristics to ensure that your home meets the needs of your new pup. Be sure to have sturdy chewing toys, a soft bed, and a safe, contained area (such as a crate or puppy-safe room) for your pup to retreat to when feeling overwhelmed.
Malteses are a small-breed dog, and can typically reach heights of around 8 to 10 inches and can weigh anywhere between 4 to 8 pounds. They usually have a long white, sometimes slightly cream-colored coat that is very soft and fluffy, and many people refer to them as a "teddy bear" dog! Maltese dogs tend to be good-natured and friendly. As this breed does not have very high exercise requirements, they are perfectly suited for living in apartments or other small living spaces.
Maltese dogs are an active breed and need daily physical exercise and mental stimulation to remain healthy and content. Generally speaking, Malteses should have around an hour of exercise each day, which should be evenly divided between structured activities such as regular walks and free time to run and play. If possible, exercise should be varied to keep the Maltese interested. Make sure to also incorporate some mental activities, such as agility training, nose work, or any other stimulating game that incorporates problem solving and learning.
Malteses are an excellent choice for family pets. They are typically loyal and loving companions, are sociable around people including children, and are relatively low maintenance when it comes to grooming and exercise needs. Because they are relatively small, they don’t require extensive exercise compared to larger breeds, so they can be a good family pet for those who have limited time. Malteses are also very intelligent which makes them easy to train and they have a cheerful nature that makes them fun to be around.
Malteses are undoubtedly very intelligent dogs. They have an eagerness to learn and pick up commands quickly, even tricks like fetching and playing musical instruments. Maltese dogs also have a knack for problem-solving and aren't afraid to freely explore their surroundings. Furthermore, they are quite attentive and responsive to their owners' commands, which indicates that they are both smart and aware of their environment. Overall, Malteses are remarkable candidates for a reliable, affectionate, and loyal companion.
