Questions & Answers
Malteses are a small breed of dog that is part of the toy group. They are sometimes classified as "Toy Group" dogs because of their small size and lap-dog behavior. They are also popularly known as the "Bichon Frise" or the "Maltese Terrier." Maltese dogs have a gentle, friendly, and playful temperament although they can be impulsive. They typically weigh around 10 pounds and have a life span of around 12-15 years. Maltese dogs have luxurious white coats and do not require significant grooming.
Malteses are considered to be hypoallergenic and non-shedding, which means they make excellent pets for people with allergies. Their coat is thick, and since it is silky in texture and grows very close to the skin, it rarely sheds. Though, as with all breeds, their coat will need to be groomed to keep it looking its best. A Maltese's coat should never be taken to the point of being over-trimmed or shaved, as that would cause additional shedding.
Malteses are a small breed of dog that require a balanced diet to stay healthy and happy. Generally, a combination of dry kibble and wet food is a good choice for a Maltese. With dry kibble as the base, wet food can either be divided into multiple meals throughout the day or as supplemental nutrition. Additionally, it is important to look for a formula that is designed specifically for small breeds like the Maltese, as the smaller size of their kibble will make it easier for them to eat.
Preparing your home for a new Maltese requires you to make sure that your home is safe, secure, and welcoming. Start by puppy-proofing your home as much as possible. This means making sure all electrical cords and small objects are inaccessible, any toxic or dangerous items are out of reach, and that floors have no loose rugs that the puppy can trip over. Install baby-gates in doorway entrances to create a barrier for puppies who can't yet be trusted in the whole house. Stock up on appropriate supplies, such as food bowls, collars, and beds.
It is difficult to predict the exact size of your Maltese puppy as there is a great deal of variation among this breed. Generally, Maltese dogs reach a mature size between 4 to 7 pounds, with some individuals larger and some smaller. Their full-grown height can range from 5 to 8 inches at the shoulder. Your pup will likely reach most of his full size by the time he is one year old. However, Maltese dogs continue to fill out over the next few years, so he may still gain weight or add a bit of height.
Most Malteses are quite fond of swimming, and enjoy taking a dip in the pool or lake. They have a water-resistant coat, and some owners even trim the fur around their legs to allow them to move faster in the water. They are generally quite brave, and some will even jump into water without being specifically commanded. Due to their size and hair, they typically make a slower swimmer than most other breeds, but they are still capable swimmers.
It is often assumed that small dog breeds like the Maltese may not get along with other pets, however, this is usually not the case. With proper socialization, Malteses are usually quite amicable with other animals, including cats and other dogs. It is important to introduce the Maltese to other pets prior to full-time living together, preferably when the Maltese is still a puppy, to ensure that any potential conflicts can be avoided or managed. During this process, having lots of positive interactions and rewards for good behavior is key.
There is no doubt that Malteses are smart dogs. They have a great capacity to learn and retain information, enabling them to pick up new tricks and commands quickly and easily. They also possesses an impressive intuition, able to recognize and respond to a wide range of cues. For example, they are able to have a keen sense of when it is time to play versus when it is time to be calm. Lastly, they are quite observant and tune into the surroundings around them.
