Questions & Answers
A Maltese is a small, friendly breed of dog originating from the Mediterranean island of Malta. They are known for their playful, loyal, and charming personalities and their long, flowing, white coats. Maltese are considered companion dogs, meaning they love to be with their human family and can often feel anxious when left alone for too long. They make wonderful pets for both apartments and houses due to their adaptability and relatively small size. Although they're known for being calm and gentle around people, Maltese are still active! Daily walks and playtime are essential for maintaining their mental and physical health.
Malteses can be considered hypoallergenic dogs. This is because they don't shed as much as other breeds and many individuals are considered to be non-shedders or low-shedders. Malteses typically have much lower amounts of dander than other dogs, which is the main cause of pet allergies, making them a good choice for people who suffer from allergies. Furthermore, they are a smaller breed of dog which also helps with the allergy issue.
Malteses should not be fed fatty, high protein, or sugar-filled foods as these can lead to health problems such as obesity and diabetes. Additionally, it is not advisable to give them snacks such as chocolate, onions, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, or anything with a lot of salt and preservatives as they can cause digestive issues. Also, refuse any food which has Xylitol as an ingredient because it is highly toxic and can cause organ failure. To ensure a healthy diet, only feed your Maltese the designated food specifically made for the breed.
Maltese generally do not have any special requirements, however, like any other breed of dog, some dogs may require more specialized care. For example, Maltese may need to be groomed more often than other breeds, as their long coats can become matted quickly. Additionally, as a small breed, they can be prone to dental problems, so regular tooth-brushing and dental check-ups are essential for their health. Finally, as with all dogs, exercise and socialization are important, so that the Maltese can remain physically fit and emotionally stable.
Malteses typically reach a maximum height that ranges from 8-10 inches and weight around 4-7 pounds. They are considered a small breed of dog which makes them perfect companions and excellent apartment dwelling animals since they don't require too much room to get their exercise. When full grown, they usually stand between 8-10 inches tall at the shoulder and can weigh anywhere from 4-7 pounds.
Malteses are known for their fondness of water, so it's not surprising that they usually love to swim. Though each Maltese may have their own individual preferences, the majority enjoy jumping in for a dip in the pool, lake, or even ocean! Many owners take their Maltese pups to the beach or to a nearby pool so that they can safely enjoy the thrill of paddling around. Generally, swimming can be a great form of healthy exercise for any dog, but it's especially important for puppies and small breeds to get a low-intensity workout without straining their joints.
Malteses are generally friendly and sweet-natured dogs that typically get along with other animals. However, like any other dog breed, they may not take well to other animals if they have not been introduced properly or socialized from a young age. It's important to introduce pets to each other gradually, with supervision, to ensure that all involved are safe and comfortable. With appropriate training and guidance, Malteses can learn to coexist with other pets and opposite species, like cats and birds.
Malteses are considered intelligent and trainable dogs. They have a strong desire to please their owners and are eager to learn new tricks and commands. They are quite sensitive to their owners' cues and respond quickly. Not to mention, they are highly social canines that often bond closely with family members. What's more is that Malteses also have well-developed memories which aid in their understanding of new activities. With their intelligence comes an independent streak, which can make them a bit stubborn at times.
