Questions & Answers
Malteses are a toy breed belonging to the Spaniel Sporting Group. They are an ancient breed of dog and have been around for more than two thousand years. They have a compact, sturdy frame with a gentle yet alert expression. Malteses have a thick, white, single-layered coat of long and silky fur that is non-shedding and hypoallergenic. They have a friendly disposition, making them great for families or individuals looking for a companion. They are smart and loyal, but may be a bit reserved around strangers.
Malteses, also known as Maltese Terriers or Maltese Dogs, are sometimes referred to as being "hypoallergenic" because of their low-shedding, low-dander coats. Nonetheless, there is no scientific evidence that any breed of dog is completely non-allergenic, so if you are allergic to dogs, don't take the risk of bringing a Maltese into your home. Hypoallergenic-breed claims are largely based on anecdotal evidence.
Malteses are known for their adorable size and long, luxurious coat, but they are much more than a pretty face! An important part of Maltese ownership is providing an appropriate diet that meets your pup's nutrient and caloric needs. A Maltese's diet should include a combination of dry kibble, a few wet canned meals, and healthy human-grade snacks. High-quality kibble for small breeds is specially formulated to supply the protein and other nutrients that healthy Maltese dogs need without the risk of gastrointestinal problems.
The best way to become a great puppy parent for your Maltese is to educate yourself about the breed. Research proper health and nutrition needs, learn the unique personality characteristics of a Maltese, and think about what kind of lifestyle will be best for your puppy. Additionally, take the time to find a reputable breeder and ensure that the puppy you purchase is up to date with all of their vaccinations and has gotten a clean bill of health from a veterinary professional. It is also very important to ensure that your Maltese receives regular exercise and plenty of mental stimulation to keep them healthy and happy.
Malteses are small, adorable dogs that typically only weigh about 4 to 7 pounds. They are very small in size and typically don't grow any bigger than this. While Malteses are mostly one size, this doesn't necessarily mean that all Malteses will be the exact same size with regards to height and/or weight. Even small changes in feeding/grooming can sometimes result in slight differences in height and weight. As long as a Maltese does not grow to more than 7 pounds, they remain a Maltese in size.
Absolutely! Exercise is important for all dogs, including Maltese breeds. However, you'll need to take extra care when taking your Maltese running. The small size of the Maltese means that they get tired quickly and can overheat easily, so it's important to keep your runs short, slow and in areas with lots of shade. Make sure to take plenty of potty and water breaks. Also, exercise caution around sharp or abrasive surfaces, like gravel or concrete. Soft grass or sand would be better options for the paws of your Maltese.
Malteses are generally known for being good companions for families, including those with children. They are highly intelligent, affectionate, and loyal breeds that enjoy attention from humans, particularly children. Malteses enjoy playing and interacting with people of all ages, but they can become easily overwhelmed in overly active environments. If trained and socialized properly at an early age, they will generally get along well with older kids. However, it is important to be mindful not to let small kids roughhouse or pick up the dog, as their frail body could readily sustain injury.
The amount of time you need to invest in the training of your Maltese depends on their age, experience, and aptitude. As a general guideline, daily training sessions should never exceed 30 minutes. It is important to create a structured routine and stick to it for best results. You may need to include up to two shorter training sessions throughout the day to maximize results. Your Maltese should also get plenty of exercise and mental stimulation outside of its training sessions. Remember, it is quality, not quantity, that matters when it comes to training your Maltese.
