Questions & Answers
There are many fun facts about Malteses! For instance, the breed's name comes from the Mediterranean island of Malta which is believed to be where the breed originated. They have a rather unique trait known as the "puppy cut" where their fur is trimmed short for convenience and style. Malteses are also one of the oldest small dog breeds, with records dating back as far as the year 292! They are a very people-oriented breed and enjoy spending time with their owners, often to the point of becoming overly-dependent.
The coat of the Maltese is a beautiful, silky, long white coat. It hangs straight to the ground and flows when the dog walks, giving it a graceful and elegant appearance. It requires very little maintenance, it is water repellent and non-allergenic and is one of the longest naturally-growing coats of any breed. The hair does not tangle or matt, making it one of the cleanest, least matted and lowest maintenance dogs in the world.
A Maltese's diet should consist of a high-quality food packed with essential vitamins and minerals to provide them with the nutrients they need for a healthy life. It should also include good sources of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats such as chicken, lamb, egg, and fish meal. You should also be sure to include healthy sources of fiber to keep your Maltese's digestive system healthy. Avoid cheap fillers such as corn, wheat, and soy in order to make sure your pup is getting the best nutrition. Remember that a variety of food types will create a balanced and ideal diet.
Becoming a great puppy parent for your Maltese involves regular grooming, consistent training, ample exercise, and regular veterinary visits. To care for your puppy’s coat, invest in a high quality brush and take time to brush them every day while washing their fur with a non-toxic cleanser a few times per month. Consistency and repetition are key in providing effective training for your Maltese puppy, so make use of positive reinforcement whenever possible.
Malteses are not considered "big dogs," as they usually only weigh between 4-7 pounds. Generally, these dogs are considered to be a "toy" breed and are ideal for those who want a small, companionable companion. Typically, Malteses are slightly longer than they are tall and have a thick, white coat. They are a lively and loving breed, making wonderful family pets even for those with young children. Despite their small size, Malteses do require regular exercise for optimal health.
The amount of time you should walk your Maltese depends on their age, size, health, and other factors. Generally, Maltese should get between 30 minutes and one hour of daily exercise. You should aim for at least two shorter walks of 15-20 minutes each, or one longer walk. If your Maltese is older, you may consider shorter walks more frequently throughout the day. Whatever you do, be sure to keep an eye on your Maltese as they exercise, and pay attention to any signs that they may need a break.
Malteses are known to be excellent family pets, especially when it comes to getting along with children. They tend to be loyal, loving, and friendly, which are ideal traits when looking for a pet that will be living around children. Unfortunately, sometimes Malteses can be overly-energetic and bark a lot, but with proper training these behaviors can generally be corrected. Malteses also tend to get along with other animals, which can make them a great companion for children.
Malteses are incredibly intelligent creatures, boasting incredible trainability and loyalty. Maltese are one of the oldest breeds of domesticated dogs, and they are known for their remarkable ability to learn commands and tasks very quickly. They are also quite perceptive, being able to easily pick up on the energy of their owners and reflect it back. As they are eager to please and consistently love to be around people, if you make an effort to train and bond with a Maltese, you’ll have a smart companion that knows how to provide unconditional love.
