Questions & Answers
Malteses are a small breed of dog belonging to the Toy Group. They are known for their long, luxurious white coats and are the national dog of Malta. These dogs typically weigh less than seven pounds, have a soft, silky coat, and are known to have a lively personality. They are intelligent little dogs that are friendly and outgoing, although they may be shy and reserved around strangers. Malteses often make great pets for urban living, as they are quiet and low maintenance.
Whether or not Malteses will cause an allergic reaction is dependent on the individual. Malteses generally do not trigger allergies as much as other breeds, however every person's allergies are unique and it is possible that some individuals may experience an allergic reaction. Since allergies can range from mild to severe, it is important to do research about the breed and consult a physician if necessary. Those allergic to certain types of dander, proteins, saliva, and/or other components of dog fur may be more prone to having an allergic reaction when exposed to this breed or any other breed.
Malteses are a delicate breed of miniature dog and should be fed an appropriate diet to ensure their health and wellbeing. It's important to avoid feeding Malteses any type of rawhide, as it can be hazardous for them to consume. Other items to stay away from are beer, candy, pickles, fatty foods, avocados, chocolate, grapes, and raisins. These ingredients can be toxic to Malteses and can make them very sick. Additional foods to avoid are large amounts of starches and grains, which can cause problems in this breed's digestive system.
Before bringing your new Maltese home, it's important to prepare your home and ensure it is a safe and comfortable environment for your new pup. First, make sure the floors are clear of any objects that might pose a hazard to your Maltese, such as wires, small toys, or loose objects. Next, buy or install a gate at the entrance to the room where your Maltese will be spending most of their time. Doing this will prevent them from accessing other areas of the house and getting into trouble.
Malteses typically come in sizes from very small to medium. While the exact size of a Maltese can vary depending on the parent breed, they typically stand between 8 and 10 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh 4 to 7 pounds. Some people may refer to the same sizes differently, however, typically small Malteses are said to stand between 8 and 9 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh about 4 to 6 pounds. Medium-sized Malteses are said to be up to 10 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh about 6 to 7 pounds.
Malteses are a small breed of dog, and as such, do not need an excessive amount of exercise compared to larger breeds. However, they do need regular walks to stay active and healthy. Ideally, they should be taken out on a walk for a minimum of two 20-minute walks each day. In addition, they require mental exercise just as much as physical exercise and should be provided with stimulating and engaging activities like agility and puzzle toys. Occasionally, they should also have access to off-leash time so they can explore their environment.
Malteses may get along with other pets in the same household; however, it is important to monitor the pets to ensure that they are interacting safely and peacefully. It is best to introduce them to one another gradually and to reward them when they exhibit positive behaviors. Additionally, providing each pet with separate food bowls and areas to call its own can help to ensure that they are each comfortable. Allowing them to share a leash while on walks, play together in a playpen, or take turns in lap time can also help them form positive bonds.
Malteses are undoubtedly smart dogs. They are renowned for their intelligence, being ranked 31st for intelligence out of the 138 breeds tested by the American Kennel Club. As a small breed, Malteses are quite intuitive and trainable, making them ideal dogs for a variety of families. Their sociable and cheerful nature makes them wonderful pets, as their devotion to learn and an eagerness to please their masters make training easier and quicker than other breeds.
