Malteses are a unique breed! They are one of the most ancient dog breeds, thought to have come from the island of Malta, Europe and are the most small and oldest European toy breed. They are also quite intelligent and have been used as a companion for centuries. What makes them so interesting is their size and that they have a long, silky coat that does require frequent grooming. The Maltese are an affectionate breed, not shy or aggressive, so they make great family companions. They have a unique personality and are bold, playful and cheerful.
The Maltese coat is unique and impressive a long, silky white coat that has no undercoat. Its hair grows to approximately 8-10 inches in length, and to give it a fun, fluffy look, the hair should be kept in its natural style. It does require some extra maintenance though not only is brushing the hair important to make sure it's free of tangles, but a monthly bath is recommended to help keep the coat free of dirt. Additionally, regular trims can help avoid split ends and keep the coat from becoming matted.
Malteses should not be fed anything containing grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, and chocolate as these foods are highly toxic and can lead to severe health issues. Additionally, Malteses should not be fed foods too high in fat and sugar as this may lead to obesity and diabetes. Table scraps should also be avoided and it is important to remember that soft bones can splinter and cause health issues. However, low-fat proteins such as lean meats and chicken as well as some vegetables are acceptable and should be incorporated into their diet in moderation.

First, make sure you have all the necessary supplies that your Maltese will need such as food, bedding, toys, grooming supplies, collar, and leash.
