Questions & Answers
Maltese dogs are believed to be some of the oldest breeds known to exist today, thought to date back as far as 4,000 years ago! Aside from their long and distinguished history, Malteses are also known for their characteristic white fur coat which has come to be associated with the breed. Moreover, they are often considered to be ideal lap dogs, due to their tiny size, measuring just 9 to 10 inches tall and typically weighing less than 5 lbs. Even though they may be small, Maltese are known to be quite alert and lively, and possess an outgoing and friendly demeanor.
Different people will have different reactions to Malteses. Some people may be allergic, while others may not have any allergic response. Allergies to Malteses are fairly uncommon, as they are not particularly allergenic, but if you do happen to experience any symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itchy throat or watery eyes, it is best to consult your physician. Furthermore, it is important to watch for other, more severe signs like chest pains, swollen lips or hives.
Maltese should not be given foods that are high in fat, sugar, and sodium, as this can endanger their health. It is also important to avoid giving them human foods, as these may also cause health problems. Some examples of human foods to avoid are chocolate, avocados, onions, uncooked meat, corn, and grapes. Additionally, Maltese are small dogs so they can easily choke on larger bones, pizza crusts, and rawhide. It's best to stick to healthy food designed specifically for Maltese, such as low-fat treats and high-quality kibble.
Before introducing your new Maltese into your home, it's important to ensure that it is a safe and secure environment for them. Begin by selecting a designated area of the house for their bed and toileting needs. Ensure that all household chemicals, poisonous plants, and the like are securely out of reach. Determine how much exercise your Maltese needs and make sure there's an enclosed area for them to play safely. Also, if you have other pets, ensure they can peacefully cohabitate by introducing them slowly with leash supervision.
When considering the size of a Maltese puppy, the best guide is the dog's parents. By looking at the size of the puppy's parents, you can get an idea of your puppy's eventual size. A full-grown Maltese typically weighs between six and nine pounds, and is generally between eight and eleven inches tall from the top of their heads down to the ground. That said, the size of any Maltese puppy can vary, depending on genetics, nutrition, and other factors.
Walking your Maltese for at least 15 minutes each day is recommended to keep them healthy and happy. This includes a combination of physical and mental exercise. Keep in mind that 15 minutes per walk is a minimum your Maltese likely won't turn down an extra walk or two! Consider varying lengths and routes along with different activities you can do with your pup to keep them entertained. Be sure to pay attention to your dog's pacing as well if they start to slow down or become overly tired, it may be time to cut the walk short.
Malteses make great family dogs! They have a playful and gentle personality and are usually great with children. They are small, non-aggressive, and relatively quiet, which makes them an ideal pet for households with children. Malteses are intelligent and respond best to positive reinforcement. This means they're quick learners and eager to please, making them relatively easy to train. Malteses need regular exercise and can be content with an outdoor stroll or an indoor play session, but they also need plenty of attention and affection.
Training a Maltese can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. The Maltese breed is considered one of the most intelligent of all small breeds, so with patience and consistency, you can be successful in basic training. A typical Maltese is eager to please, so this breed can be highly trainable, although they can display stubbornness at times. Training should be a positive, reinforcing experience, with clear commands and consistent rewards. Depending on the age and temperament of the dog, teaching basic commands like sit, stay, heel and come can be relatively easy and enjoyable.
