Questions & Answers
Malteses are a breed of tiny, lovable companion dogs typically weighing between 4-6 pounds. They are also known for their long, silky coats and their signature dark eyes. Malteses are a remarkably energetic and affectionate breed, typically making excellent family pets. These dogs can live to be over 12 years old, but have the energy of much younger dogs! Additionally, malteses make terrific watchdogs due to their alertness and willing to bark.
Many people assume that Malteses are hypoallergenic due to their signature white, long, and fluffy coat. However, the answer is not so simple. Malteses have a chronic problem with their fur shedding; their fur tends to get everywhere, releasing pet dander in the process. It is important to note that no dog breed is 100% hypoallergenic, as all dogs can produce pet dander; however, Malteses might not trigger as severe allergic reactions as other breeds because of their fur length and texture.
Malteses should not be given any foods that contain chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, or anything sweetened with xylitol as they can be toxic to a Maltese's delicate system. In addition, it is important to note that these tiny dogs can easily become overweight, so table scraps should be avoided. Soft treats in moderation are acceptable, but only in small amounts that have been approved by your veterinarian. Rawhide, pig ears, or antlers should be given in very small amounts and, if possible, supervised.
Maltese generally do not have any special requirements, as their physical and mental needs can be met with just regular pet care. However, Maltese are sensitive to cold temperatures due to their shorter coats and can get chilly more quickly than other breeds. They may benefit from a light jacket in cooler months in addition to regular exercise and socialization. Maltese owners should stay up to date on their vaccinations, regular grooming, and protective care from fleas.
Malteses are not considered large dogs. They are a small breed, typically weighing anywhere from three to nine pounds. Though some adults may reach 10 pounds, this is not the norm for this breed. Maltese dogs have long, silky coats and typically stand between seven and 12 inches at the shoulder, so while they may seem bigger due to their lush coats, they are still relatively small breeds. With proper care and nutrition, these loyal companion dogs can enjoy a relatively long lifespan of 12-15 years, even though they stay puppy-sized all of their lives!
Yes, Malteses are active and loving dogs. Their small size and friendly demeanor make them a great companion, and their daily activity level and energy help keep them happy and healthy. Malteses love to walk, run, and play with toys, and they’re typically easy to train. While they may be small in size, they still need proper exercise to keep their minds and bodies fresh and alert. A daily walk is sufficient to keep a Maltese healthy. Malteses are also incredibly loyal, making them fantastic watchdogs.
Yes, Malteses usually get along very well with kids. Their friendly and gentle nature make them a great companion for children, and they typically enjoy playtime and snuggling. They have a gentle temperament and are very tolerant of kids’ activities. Because of their small size, however, they can be easily injured, so it is important to supervise them when they’re playing so no one gets hurt. Malteses also have impressively long lifespans, so they can become a regular, trustworthy companion for children as they grow up.
The amount of daily training a Maltese requires will depend on the age, activity level and individual needs of the dog. Generally speaking, the American Kennel Club recommends dedicating at least 10 minutes per day to training and spending quality time with your Maltese. To ensure that your Maltese is mentally stimulated and well-behaved, try to incorporate additional short training sessions throughout the day around 15 minutes each to help reinforce learned behaviors. Establishing a consistent routine will help to strengthen the bond between you and your Maltese and will help to keep them engaged and eager to learn.
