Questions & Answers
Malteses are an ancient and proud breed of dog. They are thought to have descended from spaniels and used to be kept as companion dogs throughout the Mediterranean. Fun facts about Malteses include that they are one of the smallest dog breeds, standing between 7-10 inches tall and weighing around 4-7 pounds. They also tend to have long lives, often living between 12-15 years – with some even reaching 20 years old. Malteses have very little body fat, meaning they can have difficulty regulating their body temperature, so sweaters are recommended.
The Maltese coat is silky and long, with a luxurious texture that stands apart from others. It hangs straight down or is slightly wavy, and is made up of a single layer that may be parted on top—not unlike other breeds. It covers the entire body, with the face and feet and tail occurring in the typical white color, while the back remains dark grey or black. The hair should be neither too long nor too short, making the coat unique in its own way.
Malteses are generally adorable little dogs that require very specific nutrition to keep them healthy and happy. Their diets should consist primarily of high-quality, nutritionally complete dry dog food that is specially formulated for small breeds. They may also benefit from protein sources such as lean beef, white meat chicken, fish, and boiled eggs, all of which should be cooked. Dairy products, such as cottage cheese and yogurt, can also be beneficial in small amounts.
Before welcoming a new Maltese into your home, there are a few steps to prepare. First, make sure to secure any potential hazardous items like wires, cords, small objects, and other items that can potentially create a danger to the dog. Additionally, you'll want to determine a designated toilet spot for the pup and create an area in your home for them to sleep and relax. Furthermore, you'll need to make sure your yard or outdoor area is fenced off so the pup can not wander ready outside.
Malteses come in a variety of sizes, but all generally fall within the scope of a small to toy-sized breed. They can range from roughly four to seven pounds, typically averaging around five pounds. Depending on the locality, many kennel clubs accept Malteses in the 4-7 lbs range, while others may only accept those that meet the 4-6 lbs range. Generally speaking, the smaller a Maltese is, the more valuable it is in terms of show purposes.
Malteses are intelligent, active dogs that were originally bred as companion dogs. The amount of exercise a Maltese needs depends on its age, weight, and activity level. On average, adult Malteses need between 15-30 minutes of exercise per day on top of regular potty breaks and play sessions. However, young puppies require more exercise than older dogs—up to an hour per day—to ensure adequate growth and development. Exercise must be slow and gradual as Malteses can tire quickly, and sessions should be kept short and enjoyable.
Malteses can make excellent family dogs, especially for families with kids. They are a gentle, playful breed and tend to bond quickly with children, welcoming them into their 'pack.' Malteses are relatively easy to train and, when mindful of size differences, are tolerant of being handled and petted by both small and large children. For the most part, they are smart creatures who understand their environment and how to interact with people of all ages. They offer a warm, gentle presence in the home and are sure to bring balance and joy to the family.
Malteses are often thought of as smart dogs due to their eagerness to please. But, it’s important to remember that all dogs can learn, even if some are quicker to please than others. Maltese dogs tend to have a good memory, so they thrive when given consistent training and have a good sense for developing a bond with their owners. As long as they are given proper direction, Malteses are capable of learning a wide range of commands and have the potential to be quite clever.
