It has been recorded that Charlemagne, the King of the Franks, kept a large amount of these dogs in his court in the 8th century. The breed is also known for its exceptional intelligence and good temperament. Malteses are also incredibly devoted to their owners, and can even be licensed as therapy dogs due to their validating nature.
The Maltese coat is a double layered, silky coat that is snow white. It is very fine, soft and short, and does not grow any longer than 3 or 4 inches. The Maltese coat is abundant and has no body odor if kept groomed and clean. It does not need much in the way of brushing but should be trimmed regularly.
