This breeds originates from the Mediterranean country Malta, and is believed to be a descendant of the ancient Spitz-type dogs. Its long history has made it a popular choice for small dogs and the Maltese continues to be a popular companion pet today. Maltese usually weigh around 3-4 kilograms and are described as lively, courageous, and loyal.
Malteses are commonly thought of as hypoallergenic dogs; however, this is not necessarily true. Malteses do have short, smooth coats which produce less dander than other breeds, which is why many people think they are hypoallergenic. However, they produce the same amount of allergens as any other breed – dander, pet saliva, and urine – so they cannot be guaranteed to be completely hypoallergenic.
Malteses are small dogs that have a big appetite for a healthy diet. They prefer small meals throughout the day so as not to upset their system. The best diet for your Maltese should include high-quality kibble, natural proteins, grains, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Kibble should be a high-quality grain-free variety with adequate proteins, fats, and carbohydrates to meet their nutritional needs. Natural proteins should include lean meats, fish, and eggs.
