Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are hybrid dogs, also known as designer dogs. They are a cross between a Toy or Mini Poodle and a Maltese, and are often classified as a Toy dog breed. Maltipoos typically have a soft, wavy coat that may be black, cream, white, brown, red, apricot, or silver in color. They range in size and, depending on the size of their parents, can be anywhere from four to ten pounds when fully grown. Perhaps one of the most widely known characteristics of this breed is their intelligence and sociability.
Maltipoos typically have a soft, wavy, and often curly coat. The coat is non-shedding and tends to be very low maintenance, making it the perfect companion for allergy sufferers. Combining the intelligence and trainability of the Poodle with the friendly, gentle disposition of the Maltese, a Maltipoo's coat typically comes in shades of white, cream, apricot, red, black, or silver. Since Maltipoos are considered to be a hybrid breed these coat colors and variations may vary, even within one litter.
Maltipoos do not generally have special dietary needs when compared to other dogs; however, as with any breed, it is important to feed them the right kind of food. A balanced, premium-quality diet that contains all the essential vitamins and minerals is usually best for them. For optimal nutrition, you should also provide them with a variety of meat, vegetables, and grains. It is also important to ensure that your Maltipoo does not become overweight, as they can be prone to obesity. Pet owners should watch their dog's caloric intake, and make sure they are getting enough exercise.
Before bringing your new Maltipoo home, it would be wise to take some precautionary steps to ensure your house is safe and friendly for them. Pet-proof your house by making sure to properly secure any places they may have access to, like large appliances, windows, and furniture, as this can help prevent any potential accidents. Additionally, you may want to create a designated sleeping area for your Maltipoo and prepare comfortable bedding or a small kennel.
Maltipoos, which are a mix between a Maltese and a Poodle, are typically considered small to medium-sized dogs, depending on their parent breed sizes. To give 1 example, a Maltese typically can weigh between four and seven pounds, while a Standard Poodle usually weighs between 50 and 70 pounds. Thus, Maltipoos generally range in size between the two parent breeds and are not considered big dogs. Just how small or large a Maltipoo may turn out to be, however, depends on the size of both parent breeds, among other factors.
It is important to keep your Maltipoo active to maintain their overall health. The amount of walking time can depend on their age, weight, and overall activity level. Generally, Maltipoo puppies should be walked around 10-15 minutes twice a day, while an adult Maltipoo may need 15-20 minutes of walking three to four times a day. Ultimately, you know your pet's energy level best, so you can adjust the time to meet their specific needs. When in doubt, err on the side of caution and provide your pup with less, rather than more, walking time.
Maltipoos are generally known for having a friendly temperament and can get along with other pets depending on the environment they are in. Generally, these dogs are going to need a lot of socialization with other dogs and pets at an early age so they become used to and comfortable with other animals. Properly introducing a Maltipoo to other pets in the home will also be key to fostering a positive relationship between the two.
The amount of time you need to allocate to training a Maltipoo can vary, depending on the breed's individual needs, the skill set you are trying to teach them, their age, and your training experience. Generally, a minimum of 20 minutes per day is recommended, but more time is preferable, including up to an hour. During this time, you should break up the training into several short, 5-10 minute sessions throughout the day for optimal results.
