Questions & Answers
A Maltipoo is a hybrid designer breed that is a mix of a Maltese and a Poodle. They are small in size, typically weighing between 5 to 20 pounds, and range in height from 8 to 14 inches. Maltipoos have a variety of coat colors and hypoallergenic characteristics. Their coats are usually soft and curly, making them perfect for those with allergies, and their size makes them great for apartment living or small spaces. In terms of temperament, Maltipoos are known for being loving and easy-going, making it easy for their owners to train them.
The Maltipoo's coat is quite distinctive: soft, curly, and usually somewhat longer than a more traditional poodle's coat. With their backgrounds of both Maltese and poodle, the Maltipoo has a unique hypoallergenic, low-shedding coat that requires regular brushing and combing to help prevent tangling. Although they can come in a variety of color combinations, fluffy white coats are the most common—it makes them look almost like little cotton balls! Maltipoos' coats (as well as their temperaments) continues to evolve as they are bred.
A Maltipoo is a crossbreed of a Maltese and a Toy Poodle, so they can have different dietary needs depending on the size and age of your pet. Generally speaking, a dry, high-quality kibble that is specifically formulated for small breeds is a good place to start. You may also want to add in some wet, canned food for additional proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Be sure to choose a food that is age-appropriate; for example, puppy food should be used for puppies, and senior food should be used for older Maltipoos.
Preparing for a new Maltipoo pup involves creating a warm and welcoming home where your pup can feel secure and comfortable. You should plan out where in your home your pup will sleep and have access to, and ensure your home is safe and dog-proofed so your pup can't get into anything it shouldn't. Additionally, it is essential to make sure you have the proper supplies on hand such as a collar and leash, food and water bowls, bedding, and toys, as well as things necessary to groom your pup.
Maltipoos vary in size, however, they are generally considered to be a small breed of dog. While they do not typically grow to the same size as some larger breeds, such as German Shepherds or Golden Retrievers, a fully grown Maltipoo can weigh up to 15 pounds. Their average height at the shoulder is around 6 to 14 inches. So while they are not considered 'big' dogs, they are certainly small companions that bring joy and love to many households.
Generally, your Maltipoo should be walked at least twice a day for about 20-30 minutes each time. Depending on their energy level, you may need to walk them more than twice per day or for longer amounts of time. Always make sure you are prepared for the walk: have your Maltipoo on a comfortable leash and bring fresh water for them. You can also vary the length and intensity of their walks to keep them active and happy. Aim for walks of at least 20-30 minutes, twice a day or more as needed.
Maltipoos are excellent, affectionate family pets that have a great temperament. They are patient, gentle, and attentive, making them ideal for a household with children. Maltipoos typically get along well with other animals, as well as people, and particularly enjoy playing with children. They are also loyal companions who have a lot of love to give, and their friendly and gentle nature make them great companions for kids. As long as they are given proper exercise, socialization, and proper care, Maltipoos are fantastic family dogs that understand the needs of children.
Training your Maltipoo requires patience and consistency. Start by teaching basic commands like 'Sit' and 'Stay', and ensure that your pup understands your expectations. Try using positive reinforcement, like treats or verbal praise, when your pup follows the command. You can also use other methods like clicker training, which uses a special sound when your pup gets the command right. Beyond learning basic commands, you also need to use good crate training methods so that your pup will be comfortable not only in its crate, but in its new home.
